Steven Kincaid Obituary

Dr. Steven A. Kincaid of Carmel, Indiana, passed away from a recurrence of a hemorrhagic stroke, on Saturday, September 27th, 2025, at the age of 82.

Steve was born in Fishers, Indiana, and spent his early years living in the historic Flanagan-Kincaid House that most recently stood on the east side of I-69 (It was moved from its original home on 106th Street).

Steve’s parents were early Fishers residents: The gentle, friendly, and well-respected Robert L. Kincaid and feisty but quiet, Frances Randall.

Growing up, Steve loved raising Herefords and showing them at the Indiana State Fair. Always ambitious and active, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and excelled in sports, even becoming a bit of a basketball star for Fishers High School.

Steve went on to Purdue University where he was the president of Farmhouse Fraternity. In 1964, he married the pastor’s daughter (Fishers UMC), Carol Williams – a talented, stunning vocal student at the IU School of Music. Carol left her studies to be with Steve as he entered the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue and eventually started practicing in clinical settings. Steve and Carol had 2 children.

After their split, Steve returned to Purdue to earn his PhD. He soon met and fell in love with a beautiful, brainy, and bold California girl named Nancy (also a PhD).

Steve and Nancy relocated many times according to Steve’s university appointments, eventually making a big move to Silicon Valley after the birth of their daughter.

In California, Steve took a position as a researcher at the Collagen Corporation (joining the team that pioneered injectable collagen).

When Nancy became pregnant again, the family decided to find a place to settle. Steve took a professorship with Auburn University.

During his tenure at Auburn, Steve mentored generations of graduate students and conducted and published important research on arthritis. He received many awards and accolades, the most notable of which was the 2002 National Norden Award where he was recognized as teacher of the year in veterinary medicine for the entire United States. He was also given the Gerald and Emily Leischuck Endowed Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching by Auburn University and the Pfizer Award for Research Excellence.

While Steve worked tirelessly in his profession, and was beloved by students and peers alike, it is much less known that he was also a man of artistry. He chose and gave thoughtful, lovely gifts to his family. He had a rich and deep bass singing voice and was quite a good dancer. Though he was a noted academic, he most identified with the blue-collar, working man.  As his father would say, “He was the best meatcutter ever to work at the family meat market!”.

Not long after Nancy’s passing 3 years ago, Steve moved back to Hamilton County…something he thought he’d never do. His family who live locally cherished this time with him.

He made wonderful new friends at Woodland Terrace of Carmel (Christy, Michael, Ray, Frank & Judy, Tom, Hank, Lou, Tess, Nicole, John, Jim, and Peter).

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of 45 years, Nancy, his precious son, Scott, and their cat Kiki (who they thought might be immortal, but alas).

Steve leaves behind his brother, Bob, his sister-in-law, Patti, his children: Amy (Matthew), Jeremy (Dorian), and Cheryl (Robert), his magnificent grandchildren: Izaak, Isabella, and Jefferson. He also leaves behind lifelong Fishers friends: Gary and Joe, as well as many cherished colleagues and students from around the world.

Services will be held at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 at Randall & Roberts Fishers Mortuary, 12010 Allisonville Road in Fishers, Indiana, with graveside at Town Creek Cemetery in Auburn, Alabama, on Saturday, October 18, 2025.
