Steven Paul Koestner, lovingly known as "Pappi" by his children and "GP" by his grandchildren, passed away on February 25, 2025, in Savage, Minnesota, at the age of 75. Born on May 30, 1949, in Burlington, Iowa, Steve lived a life filled with curiosity, warmth, and an unmistakable presence that left a lasting impact on those around him.
Steve pursued his passion for storytelling by earning a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Iowa. His love for radio began during his college years when he hosted his own show under the moniker Sean McKay. He later became a local news anchor, bringing information and connection to his community through the airwaves. As life evolved and he started a family, Steve transitioned into a career in insurance sales, ensuring security for his loved ones while continuing to engage with people-something he did best.
A man of many interests and boundless enthusiasm, Steve was a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan who never missed an opportunity to cheer on his team. He had an enduring fascination with weather and space, often marveling at the wonders of the universe. His collection of airplane models reflected his appreciation for flight and exploration. Deeply involved in his church community throughout his life, Steve's faith journey was one of growth and evolution. Raised Catholic, he later raised his children in the Lutheran church and continued to explore his faith and spirituality alongside his beloved wife, Kris.
Steve proudly served in the National Guard, demonstrating his commitment to service beyond just words. His gregarious nature made him unforgettable-he had a voice made for radio and a personality that could light up any room. Whether sharing laughter or engaging in deep conversations about life's meaning and purpose, Steve had an innate ability to connect with others.
Steve is survived by his daughter Mary (David), son Ben (Jill), and grandchildren Noah, Henry, Rose, and Charli. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 49 years, Kris, and his grandson Benson.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 30, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Steeple Center, located at 2875 145th Street West in Rosemount, Minnesota. Additional details will be shared on CaringBridge.
Steve's legacy is one of kindness, humor, and an insatiable curiosity about the world and those around him. His memory will continue to bring comfort and joy to all who knew him.
