Steven Allen Kueter, 76, of Coggon, Iowa, passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Steve was born on September 1, 1949, in Bellevue, Iowa, the son of Donald and Ruth (Paul) Kueter.
In 1989, Steve was married to Jo McNeal at Niagara Falls, New York. She preceded him in death on August 20, 1995. On April 16, 1999, Steven was united in marriage to Julie Hewitt.
Steve was drafted into the United States Army in 1969, serving in the infantry in Vietnam until November 1970. Upon discharge, he worked at the Rock Island Arsenal and then began farming with his other family members on the family farm. Steve attended Loras College and earned his bachelor's degree in accounting. Upon passing his CPA exam, he began working for the Internal Revenue Service. Steve retired in 2008 after 31 years.
Steve volunteered with AARP for 15 years preparing income taxes for low income and elderly people. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, for 42 years as a 3rd degree, and 16 years as a 4th degree. He was an active participant at St. Stephen's in Central City and St Patrick's in Ryan. His favorite thing to do was to lead the rosary. Steve was a member of the American Legion for 55 years.
Steve and Julie were avid horse riders spending weeks camping in the Big Horn Mountains, the Black Hills, and the Rocky Mountains. He returned to farming and enjoyed riding in the combine during the harvest with Dennis Hogan. Steve was a lifelong Cubs fan and enjoyed attending yearly games in Washington, D.C. when the Cubs played the Nationals. He enjoyed spending time with his family and the many special holidays shared, especially those in Alexandria, Virginia.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Julie Kueter of Coggon; brother, William and (Deborah) Kueter of Swisher; stepsister, Jill Davis of Bellevue; stepdaughter, Sara Freiburger of Bellevue; stepdaughter, Sandee Hewitt of Shellsburg; 11 grandchildren, Samantha, Beth, Lily Bell, Max, Reba, Maurissa, Xzavier, Zander, Connor, Virginia, and Cassieopia; four great-grandchildren, Iris, Elliott, Grace and Clyde; mother-in-law, Donna Wall; sisters-in-law, Kaye Wall and Linda (John) Hoffmann; brother-in-law, Darwin Kilburg; his special nieces, Kathy, Kris, Amanda, and Tracy, nephew, Jeff, and their eight children.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather Joe Naegle; sister, Judy Kilburg; brothers-in-law, Ted Wall, Jerry Wall, and Michael Wall; father-in-law, Bill Wall; niece, Tammy Kilburg; stepson, Brian McNeal; and nephew, Cody Hoffmann.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Camp Courageous.
