Steven Michael Lee

ROCKFORD – Steven Michael Lee, age 63, passed away on January 4, 2026, in Rockford, Illinois. He was born on December 18, 1962, in Omaha, Nebraska, and lived a life defined by intellect, humor, and deep compassion for others.

Steve was a proud graduate of Doane University and Notre Dame Law School, achievements he carried with quiet confidence rather than boastfulness. A gifted trial attorney, in both private practice and as an assistant public defender, he dedicated his career to protecting the rights of the marginalized and standing up for those who often had no one else to stand up for them.

In his youth, Steve was a track star, a source of pride he never entirely let go of. That competitive spark stayed with him, balanced by a wicked sense of humor that could leave friends laughing long after the moment had passed. Steve was also a devoted animal lover, finding joy and comfort in their companionship and extending to them the same empathy that guided his life's work. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

He is survived by his sisters Susie, Denise and Barb; Chrissie Lee, to whom he was married for 16 years; and Dave Doll, whose friendship meant the world to him.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Patricia Eastman Lee, and his siblings Terry, Mary, and Jim.

True to his wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to his favorite charities, Doctors Without Borders, or local charities that provide assistance to the unhoused population of Rockford, causes that reflected his lifelong commitment to justice, humanity, and care for others
