I will always remember calling Dr. Lewis in the middle of the night when I needed him. Dr. Lewis always had a calm, pleasant, demeanor, no matter when or how often I called him. Why? Because he truly cared about not only his patients, but his nurses.

Steve was on the golf police force: a stickler for the rules. Once, on a Myrtle Beach golf hole, he put 13 balls in the water on his approach shot to the green. On the drive to Troon North in Phoenix, he entered the long driveway in the wrong direction. No way he would back up, but just gunned the car forward before any oncoming car showed up. Contemplative and mild mannered, Steve did have an adventurous side.

I have many great memories of Steve Lewis. The ability to ask him questions as a novice nurse and he would always take the time to answer them and mentor to teach critical thinking skills in a patient and supportive manner. Even when he was not assigned to consult on a patient and I had some concerns, I could ask him his opinion and he always helped-Always. Even after we played some pranks by filling the pockets of his unattended suit jacket with whatever we could grab from the supply closet. He had a great sense of humor; I could still see him looking over the glasses and saying something with a straight face when he was actually using his funny wit and catching people off guard. It was an honor to work with him.

Steve was a grade school pal of mine in Carbondale, Illinois. We had some fun adventures together. My father was a wildlife biologist with the Illinois Dept of Conservation in the early '60s and he took Steve and me on a goose hunt at one of the Mississippi Flyway refuges. We bagged one goose (I think Steve shot it) and then we plucked, dressed, and cleaned it in the Lewis' backyard (and boy that was a stinky mess!). Ms Lewis cooked it and served it to us at dinner the next day. Good to find he had a well lived life!

I was a patient of Dr Lewis with an infection no one could cure.
He did.
A fellow worker of my wife and friends, he was defined as the best.
He had a great manner and was thoughtful, caring and really brilliant in his diagnostic skills and treatments.
Barbara made the practice excel too.
I owe him a great deal along with so many others. He leaves a wonderful legacy.

Steve was a gifted physician with whom I had the pleasure of working with over many years. I will miss his expertise and compassion. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Barb and family. He was a model of what we all strive for as a physician, knowledgable, compassionate, and always available for a formal or informal consultation. I will greatly miss him. I feel very honored to have been his colleague.

So sorry to hear of his passing. I always appreciated his commitment to his patients, to the hospital and to his colleagues. He definitely inspired me and others to give the best care possible to our patients.
I also really enjoyed his wry sense of humor.... That twinkle in his eye and the little grin! A true gentleman through and through. Heartfelt condolences to his wife and his entire family. He will be truly missed!

Steve was so thoughtful in his work, and as a colleague he was so helpful to other physicians. He was a wonderful person that had many interesting pursuits other than medicine. Barb, I am so sorry for your loss. I am thinking of you and your family.

I will always remember Dr Lewis as a caring, gentle and soft spoken physician. A thorough gentleman and a ballroom dance enthusiast with his lovely wife Barbara . May his soul rest in peace and prayers for his family to bear this loss.

Dr. Lewis was NM Delnor's medical director of Infection/Prevention for years given his Infectious Disease specialty. He has been an instrumental leader participating in many quality improvement projects dedicated to reducing hospital-acquired infections, and under his guidance, we have made significant improvements over the years. Dr. Lewis delayed his retirement in order to help us battle locally, the impact the pandemic has caused. Not only was he a great person, he was a wonderful colleague. He will be greatly missed.
