Steven Kenneth Mater, 75, of Marlette passed away Friday, August 15, 2025 at his home with his family by his side.

Steve was born on September 21, 1949 in Sandusky, Michigan to the late Kenneth and Fern (Deike) Mater. Steve grew up in Sandusky and graduated with the class of 1967. He married Marcia (Donley) on April 13, 1968 at the Presbyterian Church in Marlette. Steve worked as a welder for the Ford Motor Company. He enjoyed hunting deer and pheasant with his Labrador Retrievers. Steve was an avid Detroit fan rooting for the Lions, Tigers, Wings and Pistons. He and Marcia moved to the UP in 1996 and lived there for 11 years. During that time, Steve spent his days logging and making burl furniture. He loved teaching his 4 oldest grandchildren everything about the woods, Lake Superior and hunting. Steve took every opportunity to spend time with and pass down his knowledge to his family. He and Marcia liked spending time looking for Yooperlite and special rocks and they especially enjoyed the Northern Lights.

Steve is survived by his wife, Marcia; children, Tricia (Bob) Ross and Steven (Shelly) Mater; grandchildren, Cassandra Ross (Travis Flowers), Zack Ross, Zoey Ross, Nicolas Mater, Andrew Mater and Makayla Mater; sister Peg (Dick) Dunnill; brothers-in-law Ross (Kim) Donley and Mike Boyd; sister-in-law, Linda Donley, special cousin, Ron Dennis; and last but not least, his buddies from the class of 1967, Jim Labelle, Bob Tetrick and Harley Sanderson.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sharon Mater and brother, Stacy Mater.

The family will receive visitors from 10-11 AM on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at Marsh Funeral Chapel.

Memorials in Steve's honor may be made to United Hospice of Aspire Marlette.
