Steven P. Roots, age 72, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family in the dream home he built on the lake-a place that brought him joy and peace.
Born October 6, 1952, Steve was the cherished son of Jesse V. and Mary (née Disera) Roots. He grew up in Joliet, attending Cunningham Elementary and Hufford Junior High, graduating from Joliet Central High School in 1970. He earned his degree from Joliet Junior College in 1979.
On June 30, 1973, Steve married the love of his life, Sandra Kay Heisner, at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised their family in the Joliet area, sharing 49 years of marriage until Sandy's passing in 2022.
Steve dedicated 30 years to Caterpillar, retiring as an engineer in 2003. A lifelong learner and teacher, he also taught computer engineering at Joliet Junior College for 20 years, concluding in 2020. Additionally, he served as a realtor with Disera Realty and Karges Realty for over two decades.
Steve was a rock in every storm and a helping hand whenever needed-showing up with emotional support or a toolbox in hand. His heart held the worries of others, and his skills could fix anything from broken cabinets to broken spirits. Among his proudest accomplishments was building his lakefront dream home, a labor of love he shared with Sandy. He also enjoyed cycling and was passionate about hiking Michigan's Upper Peninsula, exploring waterfalls and taking in mountaintop views.
Steve had a deep faith in God. He was a longtime member of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Joliet. In later years he attended River of Life Lutheran Church in Channahon and most recently found fellowship and comfort at St. John Lutheran Church in Joliet. He especially valued the friendships formed through Bible study and worship.
Above all, Steve was a devoted family man who cherished time with his children and grandchildren-especially at the lake, where so many special memories were made. His quiet strength, generous spirit, and servant heart left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Steve is survived by his loving children: Michael (Amanda) Roots, Lisa (Michael) Odeshoo, and Kara (Bill) Jolley; grandchildren: Riley, Delainey, Jocelyn, and Corinne Roots; Andrew Odeshoo; and Cailyn Jolley. He is also survived by his brother, Jeffrey (Marie) Roots; brother-in-law, Stan Martin; sister-in-law, Cindi (Dennis) Goron; and many dear nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends.
He is now reunited in eternal peace with his beloved wife, Sandy; his parents, Jesse and Mary Roots; and his sister, Jacqueline Martin.
Visitation will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, 2650 Plainfield Road, Joliet, IL, on Friday, August 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Robin Caldwell.
Steve will be laid to rest beside Sandy at Woodlawn Memorial Park in a private committal service.
