Steven Schkade Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 1, 2024.
Steven Charles Schkade of Austin, Texas passed away at home on February 28, 2024 surrounded by
the love of family and friends. Age 71, Steve, known by the nickname "Skade," was born September 5,
1952 and was raised in Giddings, Texas.
Steve graduated from Texas A&M in 1974. He proudly served as Commanding Officer of Squadron 15 of
the Corps of Cadets. A loyal member of the A&M 12th Man, Steve's love of college football was lifelong.
He had a 25-year career at Texas Rehabilitation Commission and enjoyed delving into real estate in
retirement.
Steve and his wife Valerie shared a great love for travel, exploring new places and cultures. Steve
expressed love through cooking and grilling for family, friends and folks who would become friends over
a shared meal! He held a passion for his family's ranch in Giddings and, with twice-weekly trips to help
his mom after his father passed away, it's for certain that his pickup knew the way.
Steve is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Valerie Taylor Schkade; his son Shawn Christopher
Schkade of Cedar Park, Texas and wife Alison Kay Schkade; beloved grandchildren Ella, Ethan and
Emerson; sister Barbara Schkade Gomez and husband Sabino Gomez; and extended family. Steve is
predeceased by his parents Clarence August Schkade and Ellie Batla Schkade.
Steve's family wishes to thank the caregivers at Magnolia Hospice and Visiting Angels. Please consider
making a donation to your favorite charity in Steve's memory.
A celebration of Steve's life will be held Sunday, March 17 from 2 - 5 p.m. at River Place Country Club,
4207 River Place Blvd., Austin, Texas 78730. To honor Steve's love of college football, please wear a
shirt for your favorite college football team.

Steve worked on my late wife's real estate team 20 years ago, after he retired from the state. We developed a friendship then and we even bought Aggie season tickets for a number of years together. Steve and his love, Valerie, were staples of the community and of the golf club and gained many friends from that. We also developed a business relationship and spoke regularly about his plans. He always was plain-spoken and tough but true to his word. He loved you, Val, and was so proud of Shawn and Alison. And, of course, he was googles about his 3 grandchildren- lighting up whenever he spoke of them. We'll all miss Steve Schkade.

I knew Steven since 3rd grade. We played all touch football and baseball in the neighborhood every week-end and he was the best athlete I ever knew. He was always nice to me, even though he was older and always let me play, as the only girl in all the games. I grew up watching him in all the sports he played and he was always my athlete idol. He was also my very first crush as a little girl and continued all through high school. We both went to A&M, and stayed friends since we had Giddings in common. I remember seeing him on several plane trips through the years and we would catch up with each of our lives, as well as some Giddings events.
I always admired him and was so happy to see him. Steven sent me a beautiful letter
after I lost my Dad that was a tremendous comfort to me. I´ll always remember him
driving around in his cool green Camaro! I will miss you my kind, special friend.
