Steven “Smitty” Smith, passed away at Our Lady of Lourdes on October 26, 2023, at the age of 64. Born on July 7, 1959, in Ville Platte, LA, Steven was the son of the late Arthur and Marguerite Andrus Smith.
After completing high school, Smitty attended Mitchell Welding School in Lafayette, LA, where he honed his skills as a welder. He went on to work in the oil and gas industry, showcasing his talent and expertise. Later, he ventured into entrepreneurship and established his own trucking company, specializing in transporting heavy equipment throughout the United States. Steven was not only a skilled welder but also a master mechanic, adept at operating and repairing various types of oilfield equipment. Friends often sought his advice on equipment repairs, testament to his knowledge and ability.
Outside of work, Steven found joy in raising German Shepherds, with his faithful companion "Rock" by his side. He also had an avid passion for watching football and NASCAR racing, finding excitement and camaraderie in cheering for his favorite teams and drivers.
Preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Marguerite Andrus Smith; and sister, Carolyn Smith.
Steve is survived by his sister, Ramona A. Smith of Ville Platte; his nephew, Arthur Paul Roche of Mobile; his great- nephews, Coby Menard of New Orleans, Jace Menard of Mobile and Ian Paul Roche of Baton Rouge; and a double first cousin, Audie Andrus, who he considered a brother. Steve had no children of his own but raised his long time companion’s grandson, Christian Ponzio, from the time he was an infant, Christian loved Steve and looked to him as his father.
The community will have an opportunity to pay their respects during the visitation services. The public viewing and visitation room will be open on Monday, October 30, 2023, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm and will continue at 9:00 am on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 until the time of service. The funeral service to honor Steven's life will be held on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at 1:30 pm officiated by Rev. Raymond Partsch in the Ardoin’s Funeral Home Chapel followed by interment at Evangeline Memorial Cemetery.
Serving as Pallbearers are Arthur Paul Roche, Ian Paul Roache, Coby Menard, Jace Menard, Audi Andrus, and Brian Andrus
