Steven Stewart Obituary

Published by Legacy on Apr. 16, 2025.
Steven Lowrey Stewart, 76, of Spring, passed away April 15th, 2025. He was born February 26th, 1949 in Dallas, Texas to the late Homer Lowrey Stewart and Betty Jane (Miller) Stewart.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathy (Mary Kathleen Black) Stewart; son and daughter-in-law, Brian Lowrey (Emily) Stewart; daughter and son-in-law Kathleen Jane Stewart (James) Spradley; grandson, Steven Wilson Spradley; granddaughters, Isabel Claire Stewart, Charlotte Kathleen Spradley, Olivia Garrison Stewart; brother and sister-in-law Daniel Morgan (Jeanann) Stewart, sister and brother-in-law, Connie Lynn Stewart (Paul) Varriale.
Steve enjoyed many activities during his childhood. He served as an Altar Boy in Port Aransas. After his family moved to Corpus Christi, Steve was very active in Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at age 15. He also loved to swim, whether in the neighborhood pool or as a summer lifeguard. It was as a lifeguard that he met his future wife, Kathy. They graduated from Carroll High School together and went to separate colleges. Steve received a track scholarship to Schreiner Institute in Kerrville, Texas, specializing in short distance dashes and relay races. His best time at 220 yards was 22 seconds flat. Eventually Steve transferred to Texas A&I Kingsville where he continued to run track, majored in Mathematics and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. To this day, many of his closest friends came from this association. Steve also loved golf, the shared outings with friends, and always, always "figuring it out".
Steve and Kathy married in 1971 and began their married life together in Irving, Texas. Steve's first employment was at Mercantile Bank Dallas, where he worked as a computer programmer. He found this new field exciting and was very proud of the latest technology. It was in Irving that their son, Brian, was born in 1974.
After Mercantile, Steve worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield, Bell Helicopter International, and then Champlin Petroleum. During that time, their daughter, Katie, was born in 1978 in Fort Worth, Texas and Steve received his MBA from University of Dallas. Champlin Petroleum evolved into Union Pacific Resources, then UP Fuels which was then purchased by Anadarko Petroleum. These different iterations moved Steve and his family several times but eventually settled in Houston in 2000.
Those Houston years saw the births of his four grandchildren. Steven (his namesake), Claire, Charlotte, and Olivia....a dream come true. Steve, lovingly known as Papa, was delighted to attend countless sporting events, concerts, theatrical plays and dance recitals. Papa was always ready to play, jump in the pool, and offer a bowl of ice cream to his favorite four.
Steve was very proud of his Anadarko years and ended his career as a Midsteam - Commercial Manager. Making lifelong friends, he retired in 2010 after 34 years. Retirement was highlighted by the building of a vacation home in Wimberley, Texas. The memories of laughter and love with family and friends will be a lasting legacy.
During Steve's 14-month residence at Sycamore Creek Ranch Memory Facility he received kind compassionate care. In addition, the family extends our heartfelt gratitude to Bayou City Hospice and Chaplain Sterling Ainsworth. Prior to SCR, Steve was assisted by "B" (Chezsuberri Nuoso) in our home. We remain grateful and are thankful for all these special people.
Steve will be remembered for many reasons by many people: Husband, Father, Papa, brother, brother-in-law, cousin, uncle, father-in-law, friend, co-worker, golfing buddy, Eucharistic Minister, volunteer. He will be missed by all.
A Memorial Service will be held May 2nd at 11 am at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 7810 Cypresswood Drive, Spring, Texas 77379. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Ignatius Catholic Church Outreach/St. Joseph's Crew. Steve enjoyed volunteering in Eagle Pass near the border; and south-east Texas helping to refurbish homes of those less fortunate. Please note in the memo line of a check "Outreach in memory of Steve Stewart".
