Steve Timmer, a devoted husband, father, uncle, educator, and coach, passed away in his home in Moorhead on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
Timmer was born on March 16, 1950, to Phillip and Olive (Ohnstad) Timmer. In July 2002, he married Sheila Holm. Together, they welcomed their son, Skylar. Timmer grew up in Moorhead, MN and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1968. He pursued higher education at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM), earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration. He furthered his academic pursuits, obtaining his master’s degree through the tri-college system at Concordia College. Timmer started his teaching journey at Border Central High School in Cavalier, ND for one year. He then went to Hendrum, MN as a PE and typing teacher. When Hendrum became Norman County West, his dedication to education extended to a leadership role, serving as principal at the elementary school.
Timmer is most well-known for his profound coaching career. He began coaching with the Moorhead Knights of Columbus Babe Ruth team in the early '70s, igniting a coaching career that spanned over five decades. In 1977, he became the head coach of the Moorhead American Legion Post 21 Golds, guiding numerous young athletes to success. Timmer’s coaching legacy continued until 2022 when he left the Golds in the hands his son, Skylar.
During this time, Timmer remained active, teaching at M-State Moorhead Technical College in 1985 in the Learning Center and managing intramural leagues. He retired from M-State in 2016. He also dedicated his summers for almost 50 years to the City of Moorhead, overseeing the maintenance of athletic fields, including Matson Field, until his retirement from the city in 2020. Timmer also actively participated in local basketball leagues, slow-pitch softball, broomball, and kittenball. He had a love for the outdoors and black labs. He enjoyed hunting, especially pheasants, and fishing. Above all, Timmer cherished moments spent with his family at their lake cabin on Big Elbow Lake in MN.
Steve Timmer is survived by his loving wife, Sheila; son, Skylar Timmer (Courtney Toulouse); dogs, Blaze and Sunnie, and many other loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Olive Timmer. Timmer’s impact on the lives he touched will be remembered fondly, and his spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 P.M. followed by the funeral service at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday March 27th, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead, MN, following the service.
