Steven G. Winder, age 72, passed away of natural causes at his home in St. Anthony, ID, with his significant other, Marcene Barker, at his side.
Steve was fourth born out of five to Gem and Varcel Winder in Pocatello, ID, on October 7th, 1952. Steve spent most of his childhood in Iona, ID, where he spent his days with his siblings and cousins doing chores, often playing softball, cowboys and indians, riding bicycles, driving race cars, hunting, and fishing, which generally led them to seek medical attention. He was an all-American country boy. He was in Boy Scouts, active in the church programs, and well-badged in both. During high school, he played football, basketball, and ran track; relay being his specialty before a motorcycle accident slowed him down with injuries.
After graduating from Bonneville High School, Class of '70, he tried his hand at military service. Shortly after being honorably medically discharged, he ventured to find his dreams and purpose, leading him to be known as a "jack of all trades" by many folks. He was a carpenter, mechanic, a DJ, event coordinator, head chef, baker, manager, and his proudest trade was being a volunteer firefighter in Island Park, ID. He led everything with passion, enthusiasm, and determination. He spent the summer/Fall of 1988 fighting the fires in Yellowstone National Park. He was known as the Chef at the A-Bar; if it was open, he generally was there. He was a member of the Hells Anglers, Managed Mack's Inn, worked for South Fork Lodge in the Palisades area, and would hang out and work at The Billiard Shop (owned by Varcel Winder) during his younger years.
Steve was known to be a vivacious, challenging, social, witty individual with an impeccable sense of humor. He was a thrill seeker and a risk taker, always keeping people on their toes from childhood to adulthood. He enjoyed many hobbies such as boating, motorcycles, snowmobiling, shooting pool, and last but not least, fishing.
Steve carried with him lessons and blessings that impacted the lives of everyone he came in contact with. The stories told capture his unique character in one word: a teacher. Right, wrong, or indifferent, he influenced many and will continue to long after his passing.
Steve's life led him down many paths, blessing him with 5 children. Oldest to youngest is as follows: Brian (Kasey) Archer (Mother-Bernie Craig), Stephanie Winder (Mother-Nita Keeling), Nathanael (Brianne) Brandemihl, Matthew Brandemihl (deceased) (Mother of Nathanael and Matthew-Korre Thompson), and Robin (AnDe) Killian (Mother-Marcene Barker). He has 15 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with more yet to arrive.
Steve outlived his brothers James "Jimmie" Winder (Virginia), David E. Winder (Jona), and many more family and relatives. His siblings that will feel his absence; Sally "Sissy" A Rose (John, deceased), and William "Billy" Winder (Leanna).
Please join the family in telling his stories at his Celebration of Life held in Saint Anthony on June 29th, 2025, at Clyde Keefer Park on Bridge Street from 1 pm to 4 pm. Lunch will be provided. We will be camping in Island Park, July 3rd through the 7th to celebrate his memory. If you are interested, please contact Brian, Nathanael, or Stephanie.
