Stewart A. Denenberg Ed.D., 86, of Plattsburgh, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 5th, 1938, the eldest of Irving and Louise (Ostroff) Denenberg’s three sons.

Stu grew up in Washington, D.C. and Atlantic City. He was the first in his family to attend college, earning a B.S. in Mathematics at Union College in Schenectady, leading to a career in the navy as a mathematician, programmer, and technical writer. After developing an interest in computers, he joined the ILIAC IV project in Champaign-Urbana, and then earned his doctorate in Computer Science Education at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In 1977, he became an assistant professor at SUNY Plattsburgh where he was particularly interested in ethical issues involving technology and teaching problem-solving skills. During his 30 year career at Plattsburgh, he established the Microcomputer Lab and served, part time, as a director of academic computing and as department chair.

In his free time he enjoyed riding bicycles, meditating, gardening, sailing, cross-country skiing, reading, photography, birding, opera, classical music, and theater. He wrote a column entitled “Technology and Society” for the Plattsburgh Press Republican that he maintained for several years.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who dedicated his time to making his family laugh and teaching them the names of all the plants in his garden. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Claire Denenberg; his daughter, Karen Denenberg of Bennington, Vermont, and son, Adam Denenberg of Albany, New York; grandchildren, Matti Price and his wife Lauren of Granger, Iowa, Tommy Price and his wife Alice of Hood River, Oregon, and Dayna Price of Brooklyn, New York; two great granddaughters, Ava and Eleanor Price of Granger, Iowa; his brother, George Denenberg of Englewood, Florida and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Daniel Denenberg.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sat., Nov. 15, from 11 - 3, at the West Side Ballroom in Plattsburgh.
