Stuart Florey Obituary

Stuart Williams Florey, age 84, died peacefully at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, Alaska, on April 5, 2025. Born in Dallas, Texas, on March 5, 1941, Stuart was the second of three sons of Tully Roland Florey, Jr., and Theresa Moore Florey, of Mt. Pleasant, Texas.

Stuart graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1959. He volunteered for the United States Army, entering service in June, 1961. During basic training at Fort Hood, Texas, he was on the champion mortar team. He was assigned to Coleman Barracks in Germany during the Berlin Crisis. Stuart was honorably discharged in 1964.

Stuart graduated from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M - Commerce) in 1967 with a Bachelor's degree and a double major in agriculture and history. In 1968, he was awarded a Master's Degree in social studies. During those summers, he worked as a Ranger at Yellowstone National Park.

In 1968, lured north by articles in National Geographic magazine, Stuart drove to Alaska with his German shepherd, Lady, to look around the state for a few weeks. He was so impressed with the rich wildlife and vast panoramas that he returned in 1969 and found a job teaching school on the Kenai Peninsula. He married Anne Hathaway, also a teacher, and they settled in Ninilchik, where they raised their daughter, Victoria.

Stuart is survived by his wife Anne, daughter Victoria (Iain Brown), grandchildren Harlan and Teagan, brother Edward Florey of Mt. Pleasant, a niece, and several nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brother Tully Roland Florey, III.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
