Stuart Hughes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by James R Baskwill Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 22, 2026.
It is with profound sadness that the family of Dr. Stuart W. Hughes announce his passing on Friday, February 13, 2026 at Park Creek Place in North Wales, PA.

He was the beloved husband of Elaine A. Hughes (nee Esposito), with whom he shared 64 years of marriage, (60 of which were in Maple Glen (Horsham Township). He was born on September 6, 1933, and died of complications from dementia, at the age of 92.

After high school graduation, he won a four-year scholarship to Rutgers University where he received a degree in Bachelor of Science. It was during this time that Stuart was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army for his service during the Korean War.

He then started his career as a science teacher at Tilden Jr. High School and then a biology teacher at Central High School (all boys at the time). Both schools are located in Philadelphia, PA. While teaching, he simultaneously pursued a Master's Degree and then a Doctoral Degree in Science. He also became an adjunct professor at LaSalle University in Philadelphia where he taught biology and clinical microbiology.

The National Association of Biology Teachers awarded Stuart with a Certificate of Distinction as the most outstanding biology teacher in the state of Pennsylvania, in the year 1980.

Along the way, he learned carpentry skills from his uncle and built a woodshed which withstood the power of an EF2 tornado which hit the Maple Glen area on September 1, 2021.

In retirement, he became passionate about orchid growing and joined the American Orchid Society, the Southeast Pennsylvania Society (SEPOS), and the Bucks County Orchid Society. He won many blue ribbons at the Philadelphia Orchid Show and other orchid shows. He also enjoyed trips, with friends, to such places as the Tinicum Wildlife Preserve. Despite his successes, though, Stuart remained a humble, quiet man.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Glenn (Shirley), and his grandchildren Daniel (Molly) Hughes, Jill (Len) Hughes, and Heather Hughes.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Friday, March 27th at the Wayside Chapel, 1156 Horsham Rd, Ambler, PA 19002, where his Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages everyone to plant a tree in their own backyard, to honor his lifelong love of nature.

I am sorry to learn of Dr. Hughes's passing. He taught me Biology in ninth grade at Central (1968-69), and I was active in the Biology Club he sponsored all four years. Dr. Hughes was truly inspiring as a teacher, even as he was quite humble and unpretentious.

I had the privilege of having Dr.Hughes for advanced biology as a freshman my first year at Central High School ( Class 242) in the fall of 1979. A modest, understated, yet brilliant teacher that I compared other professors to, during my subsequent years in college and medical school. Very dedicated teacher with a dry wit that I liked and he expected the very best from you as well. He rose above the caliber of many of his teaching contemporaries.
