Obituary published on Legacy.com by Webb Funeral Home - Shelbyville on Mar. 4, 2025.
Sue Ann Darland Bottom, 95, passed peacefully at her home on Monday, March 3, 2025. A native of Danville, she was the daughter and one of eight children of the late Virgil and Bettie Keeling Darland.
Sue was employed by Lee-McClain Clothing Factory, where she retired following over 35 years of service. Her retail career began at both Lincoln's and Lerman's in downtown Shelbyville, where she made many friends.
Sue was a continually active member of First Christian Church until her health precluded regular attendance. Once she stopped driving, she faithfully rode the church bus to services as long as she was physically able to do so. She was active with her Sunday School Class, served on the Nurture Committee, was active in the Christian Women's Fellowship and served on the Diaconate for many years. Reading her daily devotional, she found joy in prayer, strength in scripture and peace in the promises of eternal life.
In her leisure time, she enjoyed flower gardening, both roses and irises, and raising vegetables, which she later canned. She enjoyed swimming and was still swimming just two years ago. She loved to play bridge and all cards, work puzzles and took immense joy in cooking for her family. She was known for her fried chicken, the best fried pork chop ever and her amazing cheeseburgers. She was an avid ball fan, watching UK basketball and, as a supporter of all her state's teams, she often watched U. of L. as well. She enjoyed all the sports in which her grandchildren participated and attended their games regularly. She enjoyed traveling to Florida to visit her sister, where trips to the beach brought her great joy. In her younger days, she enjoyed walking and would often walk to the former Masonic Home to visit family and friends. She enjoyed listening to music on the radio, particularly her church music and kept current on local, state and national events. Voting was important to her. She also gained a reputation as an excellent "back seat driver."
Sue was full of life and always had that wonderful smile. It has been said that "she was tiny, but she was mighty." To know her was to love her.
In addition to her parents, four brothers, Jerry Darland, Parker Darland, Randell Darland and William Darland; two sisters, Louise Stephenson and Elizabeth Parker and her grandson, Chris Waits, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, Ronnie Bottom (Patty) of Elmburg; her daughter, Donna Waits (Charlie) of Shelbyville; her grandchildren, Kelly Waits-Andriot (Micah), Zachary Waits (Holly), Emily Wantye (Cody) and Madelyn Bottom; her great-grandchildren, Warren Wantye, Mya Andriot and Olivia Andriot and her sister, Bernice Osborne (Frank). She had many friends, neighbors, nieces and nephews that were an integral part of her life. The greatest joy she had was loving her Lord and Savior and being devoted to and making those around her feel loved.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 6, 2025 at First Christian Church with visitation after 10 a.m. Rev. Dr. Dave Charlton will deliver the eulogy. Cremation will follow the services in accordance with her wishes, and the cremated remains will be privately interred later.
Flowers are welcome and expressions of sympathy may be made to First Christian Church, P.O. Box 851,
Shelbyville, KY 40066-0851 or the charity of donor's choice.
