Sue McDowell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Martin & Hightower Funeral Home - Carrollton on Mar. 18, 2026.
Sue Moses McDowell, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 17, 2026, at the age of 80.

Sue was born on May 10, 1945, in Hurricane, West Virginia, to the late James Thomas Moses and Elnora Bird Moses. In time, her life brought her to Carroll County, where she would spend many years caring for others in both quiet and meaningful ways.

For much of her working life, Sue served as a cafeteria worker at Central Elementary and Central High School. It was work she took pride in, not just preparing meals, but creating small moments of kindness in the middle of a busy school day. She had a way of making students feel seen and cared for, often with nothing more than a warm smile or a gentle word.

Outside of work, Sue found joy in simple, steady rhythms. She loved to crochet and treasured her time with the crochet group at the Whitesburg Library, where friendships were formed stitch by stitch. She was also an avid reader, always enjoying a good book, and she held dear the memories of camping trips shared with her husband, Larry, times marked by laughter, quiet moments, and the comfort of being together. Sue was also a devoted member of the United Church of God in Rome, Georgia, where her faith was an important and steady part of her life.

More than anything, Sue's life centered around her family. She was a devoted mother to Lora Neese and her husband, Monty; James Johnson and his wife, Connie; Beth Born; Judith Lacy; and Bryan McDowell. Her love extended through generations, living on in her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, each of whom carries a part of her with them. She was a steady presence in their lives, supportive, caring, and always there when she was needed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Lincoln McDowell.

Funeral services for Sue McDowell will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Martin & Hightower Funeral Home, with Jason Musgrove officiating. She will be laid to rest at Carroll Memory Gardens, with Dustin Born, Andrew Johnson, Tim Marshall, Kevin Moses, Russell Moses, Jeremy Neese, and Josh Neese serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 19, 2026, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Sue will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her kindness to others, and the quiet, faithful way she lived her life. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Messages of condolence may be shared with the family at www.martin-hightower.com. Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel is honored to serve the McDowell family.
