Sue Payne Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cagle Funeral Home - Jasper on Feb. 19, 2026.
Ms. Sue "Sudie" Payne passed away on February 19, 2026, at the age of 85. She was born on May 9, 1940, in Whitestone, Georgia, to the late Jack McGhee and Estie McArthur.

Sue was known for her humor, her quick wit, and her wonderfully unfiltered way of speaking - never unkind, always meant to bring a smile. She loved being a trickster, pulling pranks, and telling jokes so straight faced that you believed every word until she burst into laughter and said, "I got you." Her playful spirit made life brighter for everyone around her.

Home was where Sue was happiest, especially when she was caring for her grandchildren, who lovingly called her "Ganny." She loved the mountains, the creeks, and the simple joys of everyday life. But nothing brought her more happiness than her grandchildren, who were truly the center of her world.

Sue is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Jimmy and Sammy McGhee; and her sisters, Janis Stancil, Jane McGhee, and Diane Towery.

She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Shona (Mike) King; her grandchildren, Josh (Ariel) King, Jake King, and Shali (Trenton) Lunn; her great grandson, Weston King; her great granddaughter soon to arrive, baby girl Lunn; and her brother, Billy (Charlene) McGhee. Her absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but her love and laughter will continue to live on in each of them.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Whitestone Cemetery, with Pastor Eddie Rhodes officiating.

The family will be receiving friends at their home directly after the graveside service for those who wish to pay their respects.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Whitestone Baptist Church Cemetery Fund (53 Cripple Creek Drive Ellijay, Ga., 30536) or Woodstock Church Jasper (5335 Highway 53 W Jasper, Ga., 30143) in memory of Sue.
