Sue Ellen Harrell Powell, 83, of Vada Community went home to be with the Lord on September 29, 2025. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2025 at Morningside Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Everson officiating. Jimmy McClure, Frank Farmer, Miguel Rodriguez, Jr., Kenny Kelly, Randyl Godwin, and Phillip Martin will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Sue Ellen Harrell was born December 14, 1941, in Bainbridge, Georgia, the daughter of Charlie Will and Margaret Davis Harrell. As a student at Mt. Pleasant School, she knew she would become a teacher. She graduated from Bainbridge High School with the Class of 1959 and attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Sue earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Georgia Southern College. She began her teaching career at Jones-Wheat Elementary School. Sue married Rex L. (Buck) Powell in December of 1963, and the young couple moved back to Statesboro for him to complete his degree. While there, she taught elementary school in Metter, Georgia. Later, they returned to Bainbridge where she taught at Morningside Kindergarten, the Oaks Academy, and, finally, retired from Jones-Wheat Elementary School in 2002. Outside of school, Sue taught Sunday School and Bible studies to ladies and children of all ages at Mt. Pleasant and Morningside Baptist churches, and in the community. She loved the Lord with all her heart. She was a faithful wife to Buck and a devoted mother to her four children. She rose early to spend time in prayer and Bible study. Her love language was acts of service and she loved much. "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned and let her works bring her praise at the city gates". Proverbs 31:29-31.

Sue is survived by her children, Jeff (Kim) Powell and Susan (Hugh) Lanier of Bainbridge, Anna (Miles) Henry of Perry, Georgia, and Rex (Amy) Powell, Jr., of Sharpsburg, Georgia; and, her grandchildren, Callum Henry, Margaret Henry, Jay Lanier, John David Powell, and Matthew Powell, and many cousins who loved her dearly. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Rex L. (Buck) Powell.

The family would like to express our deep appreciation for the ladies of Kaye's Caring Hands who loved and cared for mama and the outstanding staff of Georgia Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Georgia Baptist Children's Home. Online visitors may sign the guest register at www.bryantfuneralga.com.
