IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Sulo William "Bill" Romo, 83, of Ironwood Township, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 22, 2026, amidst his family.
Bill was born on Feb. 13, 1943, in Bessemer Township, a son of Hiski and Ina Martha Romo. He attended A.D. Johnston High School and graduated in 1961.
Bill was a proud lifelong resident of Ironwood and a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was known for his strong work ethic, love for his family and deep connection to the Upper Peninsula community.
Bill served his country with honor and was a dedicated member of the honor guard and the American Legion, where he also served as commander - a role he valued deeply. One of the most meaningful experiences of his life was participating in the UP Honor Flight in May 2025.
During his working years, Bill was a UPS delivery driver and became well-known throughout the area. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling, playing softball, cribbage and horseshoes. Bill absolutely loved going to "kamp" with the guys. He spent time at Copper Peak, helped groom the Wolverine Ski Trail and could often be found plowing snow with his four-wheeler during long Upper Peninsula winters.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Arla (Kangas) Romo; three children, Noel (Paul) Aho, Bill (Syndie) Romo and Mark (Kristen) Romo; seven grandchildren, Payton (Matthew) Dary, Paige Aho, Brandon and Brooke Romo, Jacob (Hope) Lane, Danyel and Joel Mullin-Romo; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Nicole (Romo) Lane, in 2004; three brothers, Reino, Rudy and Dave Romo; a sister, Helen (Romo) Johnson; a niece, Michelle (Romo) Wetzelberger; and two nephews, Michael and Ray Romo.
Out of respect for his wishes, cremation has taken place.
A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held on Saturday, March 7, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 9:30 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church, E5104 Margaret St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. David Jacob officiating.
Following the service, military rites will take place at the church under the auspices of Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard, assisted by the U.P. Funeral Honors Team.
A luncheon reception will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the military honors.
Committal services and interment will take place in the spring at Sunset Acres Cemetery, Ironwood Township.
In lieu of floral offerings, memorial contributions in Bill's memory may be made to Wolverine Ski Trail, c/o Mary Ahnen, treasurer, 701 S. Moore St., Bessemer MI 49911, or American Legion Post 5, Box 284, Ironwood MI 49938.
