The children of Dr. Sunanda Mohanty are heartbroken to announce her passing on Saturday, June 3, 2023. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt; a brilliant, dedicated medical professional; and a dear friend to members of many different communities, all of whom came to depend on her kindness and support.
Possessed of a brilliant and incisive mind, Dr. Mohanty filled her lifetime with intellectual and professional accomplishments. In addition to her first medical degree, earned in her twenties, she returned to advanced study in her field in her forties, specializing in Tropical Medicine. In her fifties she established a successful medical practice of her own, and in her later years she fostered the endeavors of other businesspeople. These accomplishments, difficult on their own, were achieved despite great personal adversity.
Her intellectual and professional accomplishments were matched-and often overshadowed-by the personal qualities for which she was held dear: kindness, empathy, and compassion. Her sacrifices on behalf of her family were a given. But she demonstrated similar care and compassion for anyone who came into her orbit. As a doctor, she did not hesitate to aid patients who had nowhere else to turn due to poverty or duress. And she did not refrain from helping others when it was no longer easy for her, or when her own security was in doubt.
These aspects of her life and personality were based on the same twin foundations: a magnanimity of spirit and relentless optimism. Despite every setback, and in the face of every challenge, she retained her faith in the beauty and sweetness of life; and she saw the good in every person she encountered, even when they did not show kindness or consideration in return.
Even as she struggled with the sickness and death of her husband, and in the final months of her own illness, her heart never grew dark, or doubtful, or numb. She rejoiced in the smallest details of life, took every occasion to laugh, and demonstrated repeatedly and without effort or strain the love she felt for her family and friends.
Dr. Sunanda Mohanty, 79, of Cuttack, Odisha, India, passed away wrapped in the peace, the light and the love of her divine Mother. Even as we suffer the pain of her loss, we ask her to lend us her strength and good cheer-to remember that she lives on in our hearts and minds, forever.
