Sunny B. Mao, 79, passed peacefully on October 28th 2024 in his Westbrook home surrounded by family and friends. Sunny was born on March 27th, 1945 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia to Mao Khun (father) and Peou Krum (mother). Preceded in death by his wife, Peou Kri.
Sunny lived a life full of giving. His non-profit work and humble temperament served as an act of love for everyone around the world. Sunny survived one of the most historic genocides to ever exist in global history. Moving forward, he would find himself a caretaker and nurse for those affected by the genocide. He never took a day for granted and believed his whole life purpose was to give to others without formatting any owed dues. He was a bastion of generosity who brought a sense of community wherever he went. Impressively speaking multiple languages fluently, Sunny became a trailblazer in community work. His memory will remain in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those who were honored to have had the privilege of knowing him. His unforgettable spirit paved the path for his legacy that will continue to live on for generations to come. In addition to his charitable way of life, he was a loyal member to his Cambodian temple, a mentor, a loving brother, father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his older sister in Cambodia, his children, Stephan Yin; Sidoung Mao; Sinol Mao and her husband Kevin Chao; Sinat Mao and her life partner Elijah David; Sophanny Mcardle and her husband Rod Mcardle; Jeanne Hoxie and her husband Tobias Hoxie; Jeantalon Kri; and Soriya Kri. His 17 grandchildren; Chandara, Channara and Chanthara Ros; Liam and Teagan Mcardle; Ronin and Mya Chao; Sophie and Myles David; Elias, James and Finnegan Hoxie; Mirabelle, Lucien, and Julienne Kri; Lianna and Kai Kri; and 3 great-grandchildren; Kenneth, Zoey and Edison Ros. It is believed that Sunny has joined his son Dimanche M. Kri and granddaughter Hannah K. Hoxie in the afterlife where they must be collectively smiling down on us.
The family would like to express their greatest gratitude to Fresenius Kidney Care and their staff in Portland Maine on 1600 Congress St. Their unwavering and supportive love given to Sunny while under their care goes unmatched.
Sunny's Funeral service will be held at 1pm on Saturday at A.T. Hutchins Funeral home on 660 Brighton Ave, Portland, Maine 04102. Following the service a burial will be held at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St. Portland, Maine 04102
