Susan Marie Albring, 68, of Ida, a talented baker, artist, and co-owner of the former Sisters Bakery in Ida whose life centered exclusively around building and maintaining a large, close-knit family, died Saturday, Sept. 6 in Toledo Hospital after an auto accident.
A native of Toledo, Sue was the third of six children born to the late Roger and Charlotte Vellequette. The family moved to Ida township from Toledo in 1969, and it was shortly after that Sue and her husband of 49 years, John Albring, met and began dating while both were classmates at Ida Junior High.
Sue graduated from Ida in 1974, where she played varsity basketball and was crowned homecoming queen. The couple married after high school moving into an historic farmhouse and acreage in Ida. With the first of the couple's four children on the way, they renovated the home and made it their own. Sue hand-painted a full wall mural of favorite cartoon characters to adorn their newborn daughter's bedroom wall.
While John worked the family farm, Sue worked in the deli/bakery of her family's grocery store, Vellmar Foods in Toledo, where she specialized in decorating cakes, including elaborate wedding cakes. Throughout her life, Sue made and decorated the cake for each family member who got married, including her own, her siblings and her children.
After the family grocery store closed, Sue and younger sister, Judy Notario, opened Sisters Bakery in downtown Ida, making cakes and baked goods, sandwiches and soups for the community. When Comair Flight 3272 crashed during an ice storm on Jan. 1997, just a few miles away in Raisinville Township, Sue and Judy were there within hours to deliver hot food and drinks to first responders.
After the bakery closed, Sue worked as a food preparer and cook in the cafeteria at Ida Middle School, retiring in 2017. She joined John and earned her own commercial driver's license, working a side job for years for M.C. Eipperle Trucking, of Monroe, hauling mail. She retired from that job in 2023 to spend more time caring for her family.
All four of Sue and John's adult children, as well as their seven grandchildren, lived in close proximity of the couple's home. She delighted in making them meals each week as a group and being actively involved in her grandchildren's lives and activities, including sports and 4H. The large family also took annual vacations together, and Sue and John also traveled regularly with Sue's siblings.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Lynn and Dorothy Albring; brother-in-law Michael Notario and sister-in-law Debbie St. John.
In addition to her husband, Sue is survived by daughters Bobbie (Jason) Rice, Jayme (Jason) Parker and Toni (Tim) Hubbard; son Todd (Katie) Albring, all of Ida; sisters, Patty (David) Duvall, Karen Vellequette, and Judy (David Edelbrock) Notario; brothers Jim (Lauralee) and Larry (Robin) Vellequette, and grandchildren Xavier, Ashton and Palmer Albring, Reese and Quinn Parker, Hudson and Harper Hubbard.
