Susan Whitsey Griggs Braman died on December 21, 2025 in
Titusville, Florida at the age of 85. She was predeceased by her parents Charles Whitsey Griggs and Virginia Warner Griggs, and her husband of 45 years, Ellis James Braman.
Susan was very much a product of
Virginia Beach, Virginia. She grew up fishing, crabbing, and spending most every day at the beach during the summer. She attended Willoughby T. Cooke Elementary and graduated from Virginia Beach High School in 1958 before going on to the College of William and Mary, where she was active in several organizations including Kappa Alpha Theta.
Upon graduation Susan returned to Virginia Beach where she was a member of the faculty that opened Floyd E. Kellam High School in 1962. There, she taught a variety of social studies courses and served a stint as department chairman.
In the late 1960s Susan met Ellis James Braman, Lt. Col., USAF, who was stationed at nearby Langley AFB. After a courtship of nearly a year, the two married, and while E. J. served an assignment to Tan Son Nhut AB in South Vietnam, Susan concluded her teaching career.
Susan then accompanied her husband to his various duty stations: Lindsey AB in Wiesbaden, Germany; RAF West Ruislip, England, when the couple lived in Chalfont St. Peter, Bucks.; K.I. Sawyer AFB, near
Marquette, MI; and Maxwell AFB, AL. Susan wrote articles and light verse for officers' wives' club magazines.
With EJ's acceptance of a position with a contractor for Kennedy Space Center, the pair moved to Titusville, in 1982. Susan received a Master's degree in Communications from University of Central Florida.
A devoted anglophile, she fondly remembered the years she and her husband spent while stationed near London. In addition to reading and walking, she played a lot of golf and bridge because she appreciated the convivial camaraderie that these two games provided. She enjoyed life immensely,
She is survived by three nephews: Mark, David, and Jim McKinney and Jim's wife Catherine and children Skye, Zane and Dexter. She is also survived by a host of cousins and acquaintances and several very good friends, including Linda Fentress, whom she met before either had learned to walk.
A celebration of Susan's life will be held at St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, Titusville, at 11:00 on January 31, a Saturday. A reception will follow nearby. Burial will be in the Serenity Garden at St. Gabriel's.
