Susan Marie Cain, devoted mother, wife, sister, and friend, left this earth on March 30th, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Sue was born in Gloucester, MA, on September 18, 1951, the eldest daughter of the late William J. and Phyllis S. (Thompson) Andrewes.
Growing up on Little River, she spent her childhood boating, fishing, water skiing, and embracing any adventure that came her way. Athletic and fearless, Sue pursued her passions without hesitation, excelling in anything she did.
She attended St. Mel Day School and graduated from Bishop Fenwick High School in 1969. Following high school, she attended Salem State College, where she earned her degree in Elementary Education in 1973.
Sue's work career began at the age of 14 at Stop & Shop in East Gloucester, where she worked until she graduated from college. After graduating, she began her career as a second-grade teacher at East Gloucester Elementary.
Sue took time off from teaching to have her first two children and began her real estate career working for several years with Lufkin and Brown, where she met her future husband, Tim. She eventually established a successful buyers' brokerage office, Cain and Polley Exclusive Buyers Brokers, where she was well-respected in the community and formed many lasting friendships.
Her four children were her world. She shared her love for the outdoors with them, taking them camping, fishing, and to the beach in the summer and ice skating and skiing during winter months. She loved attending her kids' school performances and sporting events and was often the loudest spectator in attendance.
Sue was a true creative spirit, finding joy in singing, dancing, and painting. Her quick wit and infectious sense of humor made her the life of the party, while her playful and goofy nature brought joy and laughter to all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
At the age of 49, Sue was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. After her course of treatment was completed, she went on to live a life filled with love and gratitude. She was always excited to wake up and see what the day would bring. Her strength and faith were felt by all who knew her, and she devoted countless hours to St. John the Baptist Women's Guild and the Women of the Well.
Susan is survived by her husband of 36 years, Timothy Cain and her children Andrew Scola and wife Lily, Jamie N. Hurd and husband Jacob, Michelle S. Cain and fiancé, Alex Frontiero; and her son Matthew T. Cain; her beloved grandchildren, Quinn and Tessa Scola and Henry and Oliver Hurd; her mother-in-law, Beverly Cain; her sisters, Nancy Mertens and partner, Brad Chisholm, and Julie Brighi and partner, Thomas Hill, her sister-in-law Tracey O'Donovan and husband Jim.
She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Bill Mertens, Danny Mertens, Mike Cain, Hannah Cain, Heather Cain, Christian Brighi, and Lara Brighi, as well as her great-nieces and nephews, Violet and Kingsley Cain, Eli Mertens, and Raith and Beckett Newton. Additionally, she leaves behind many cousins and a large circle of friends.
Family and friends are welcome to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial for Susan on Thursday, April 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 52 Main St., Essex, MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Susan's memory to Neurofit, a program of Supportive Living Inc.:
