Clemen-Stone, Susan
Whitmore Lake, MI
Her Legacy Susan Ann Clemen-Stone, 83, passed away January 18, 2025, surrounded by family. She was born on December 2, 1941, in Dyersville, Iowa to Aloysius Clemen and Verna (Gearheart) Clemen. Susan married the love of her life, Denver Stone, on December 23, 1981, in University Park, Pennsylvania. Her marriage to Denver brought her into a special family; she had many special times with his children, grandchildren, parents, siblings and nieces, nephews and friends.
Susan had a distinguished career in nursing. She earned her diploma in the early 1960's from St. Vincent's School of Nursing in Toledo, Ohio. After working as a hospital nurse she realized that there was a need for patients to have ongoing care once they left the hospital. This motivated her to pursue her undergraduate degree in nursing from Michigan State University and her graduate degree in Public Health from the University of Michigan, where she spent four decades as an associate professor of nursing. She had a passion for helping people and worked in many neighborhood health clinics. Susan is noted nationally and internationally for her work in Community Health Nursing, spending over four decades in education, continuing education, research and outreach. Susan, her colleagues, her students, and professional organizations always used community health agencies throughout the state of Michigan delivering ongoing programs and care to clients in need. Susan and her colleagues authored the first textbook, Comprehensive Community Health Nursing. This book was used for years to help educators and practitioners to develop programs responding to the needs of other professionals both academic and practitioners, nationally and internationally. An important tribute to Susan was that she had been blessed to continue sixty year friendships from her nursing school days, and with a number of Michigan and agency faculty. Not many of us can make that claim.
Susan loved to learn and was an avid reader. Even in all of her accomplishments, she was incredibly humble. She loved to travel and stay busy. Susan was kind, generous, thoughtful and always willing to lend a helping hand. Her family meant absolutely everything to her. One of her proudest moments was seeing her granddaughter, Holly, graduate from U of M nursing school. Susan was loved by so many and will be dearly missed.
Her Family Susan will be missed by her sisters, Sara (Henry) Parks, Sharon Clemen; stepdaughter, Teresa (Scott) Donner; grandchildren, Holly (Tyler) Cotter, Tyler Donner; great-grandchildren, Eastyn Cotter and Jack Cotter. She is preceded in death by her husband, Denver Stone; parents, Aloysius and Verna Clemen; brother, John Clemen; and stepson, Rick Stone.
Her Farewell Susan's family and friends will gather for a Community Farewell on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at 4:00PM (3PM gathering), at Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Hamburg Chapel. Pastor Dan Quagliata will serve as celebrant. Her burial will take place on Monday, February 3, 2025, at Lakeview Cemetery in Green Oak Twp, at 1:00PM.

Susan was one of my faculty in my Master´s program in Community Health Nursing. She had a passion for community health that she passed on to others. I loved talking with her because I felt as if she understood me as it related to nursing. I´m so sorry for your loss but know she impacted so many people.

I cannot find the words to say what I want to say about this remarkable teacher. I was her student for community health/hospice master degree. I'm so saddened to hear of her death. Sue was a inspiration to me, a teacher like I always hoped I would be if I taught. She had patience, knowledge, professionalism, and understanding. I don't know anything about her personal life, but professionally if I had to choose one teacher out of all the teachers I've had, I would choose Sue.
My deepest sympathy goes out to Sue's family and friends. What you have lost is certainly irreplaceable. Please note that Sue taught hundreds of nursing students, if not, thousands, in her 40 years at University of Michigan. She lives on in those students, their students, and the many patients that these nurses have taken care of over the years.
