Susan Levin Fishbein passed away on February 5, 2024, at the age of 73, after a lifelong battle with late-onset Tay-Sachs disease. Daughter of the late Lester and Zelda Levin. Sister of Stephen (Joyce) Levin. Former wife of Marc Fishbein. Beloved mother of Bobbi (Brad) Portnoy and Matthew (Sharon) Fishbein, and Grammy to Ashton, Ilana, Isabelle, and Magnolia.
Susan was born in Philadelphia in 1950, grew up in Mt. Airy, and attended Germantown High School. In 1987, she was diagnosed with late-onset Tay-Sachs after many years of falls, struggles, and misdiagnoses. In 1992, Susan and others started the Late-Onset Tay-Sachs Foundation to support people suffering from the rare genetic disorder. Susan spent the last 10+ years of her life at Abramson/Horsham Center for Jewish Life – attending synagogue, making friends, building community, and participating in daily activities. Susan was a HUGE Phillies fan. She loved working on puzzle books, watching game shows on TV, and proudly bragging about her children and grandchildren to everyone she met.
Relatives and friends are invited to a graveside service on Wednesday, February 7, 2:00pm precisely at Montefiore Cemetery, 600 Church Road, Jenkintown, PA. Shiva to follow at the Portnoy residence. Shiva will also occur at the same address on Thursday, February 8, noon to 8:00pm, and Friday, February 9, noon to 5:00pm.
