Susan (Susie) Fox of Indianapolis went home to her Lord early on Friday afternoon, September 29th, 2023.  She was 81 years old, having just celebrated her birthday on July 7th.  Susie was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2018, although she experienced symptoms for many years prior.  Susie was placed on hospice care in October 2022.  Her and Ernie, the love of her life, had promised each other to never put the other in a nursing home.  Before Dad passed, I promised him that I would keep his promise to Mom.  With the help of family, friends, hospice, and caregivers, we were able to fulfill that promise, and are forever grateful for each and every person who made this possible.  Susie did suffer, but she also experienced much laughter, which was her nature, and was surrounded by love in her final days at home.

Susie married Ernie at the tender age of 21.  We believe she died in large part from a broken heart, manifested in a steady decline over the six months following her husband’s death.

Susie was an Army wife and traveled the world with Ernie and their children, coming back to the United States in 1979 when he retired from the service.  Susie worked various part time jobs while living on Army bases, and after coming back to the U.S., she worked at Fresh Cut Produce for a period, but mostly waitressed at three major hotels in the downtown area:  The Essex, Atkinson, and the Murat Temple.  At 55 she took a “break” and never went back, preferring to spend her time as a wife, homemaker, and mom, all of which were the reason she only worked part-time in the first place.

Susie was very social and loved dropping in on people unannounced, always dragging the three of us in tow!  She was very tidy and loved to cook.  While living in Virginia on an ocean-front Army base, she would cook up whatever Ernie brought home from the sea, and later from the river!  She also loved to laugh and have fun, throwing huge parties over the holidays, usually on Halloween and Christmas.  She was born with music in her soul and loved to dance, right on to the very end.  Mostly though, she loved the Lord, and her sweet spirit touched every life that crossed her path.  Almost or as much as she loved God, she loved to spend time her husband Ernie, their three children, grandchildren and great children.  She was a protector, provider, and fighter, and everything she did, she did with the love of God in her heart.  She believed and lived as if everyone had Christ in them, and should therefore be treated accordingly.

Susie is survived by her children Mark Allen Fox (daughter-in-law Connie Sue Fox), Susan Ruth Fox, and Daniel Joseph Fox; her grandchildren Shane Fox, Emily Keener, and Lindsay Marie Litteral; great-grandchildren Ethan Keener, Aaron Keener, Kelsie Keener, Justin Keener, Natalie Keener, and Xavien Litteral; his sister Katherine Carr.

Susie is preceded in death by the love of her life, Ernest Leroy Fox; her parents, Bridget & John Carr; her brothers Frank, Jimmy, & Johnny Carr; her sisters Jo Belyea, Theresa (Mo) Carr, & Mary Cassler; her grandchildren Kelsie and Michael Litteral-Fox, and Nathan May.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the national Alzheimer’s Association in hopes of finding a cure for the disease that, though it took her life, could never touch Susie’s sweet spirit.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 7th, 2023, from 10AM-2PM at Flanner Buchanan—Washington Park East, 10722 E Washington St.  The funeral service will begin at 2PM and will include a Celebration of Life.  In honor of Susie’s spirit, the family asks that you dress in your brightest.  Susie will be laid to rest in Washington Park East Cemetery.
