Susan Ann Hurley was born to James and Sylvia Hurley on April 8, 1963. She grew up in North Reading, Massachusetts, and loved her New England roots. As the story goes, she once missed the school bus in elementary school - and from that day forward, she never stopped running. Her passion for fitness was matched only by her devotion to family and her love of cheerleading.
She became a Patriots cheerleader in her 20s. Around that time, she met Boston Marathon Race Director David McGillivray. They married in the late 1980s and had two sons, Ryan and Max. She spoiled her boys with endless love and support - cheering them on at every game and performance. "Mulch" and "Peanuts" were her pride and joy.
Though Susan and Dave divorced in 1996, they maintained a close friendship and working relationship. Both lived in North Andover for more than 30 years, raising their sons there. Susan loved her town - especially walking the common and greeting the neighborhood dogs.
In 2008, Susan began her life's work by establishing CharityTeams, a small business that helps nonprofits raise funds through athletic events. "Fun-raising" was the name of the game as she started with a small cohort of Boston Marathon runners raising money for Lazarus House of Lawrence. Over the years, she helped hundreds of runners across various races achieve their running goals while raising an impressive $42 million for nonprofits.
The cornerstone of her endeavors was her work with the Boston Marathon. For 18 years, she trained runners each marathon season, leading weekly long runs along Heartbreak Hill. Her signature "Superhero 17" training run event featured charity runners dressed as superheroes running 17 miles of the marathon course, while the "Hop 21" was another training run that marked the first days of spring as eager runners geared up for the big day. Her personal touch, kindness, and vibrant personality were often the spark runners needed to make it across the finish line.
As her business flourished, her love life found its stride as well. Barry Foland of Owings Mills, Maryland, entered her life, and together they shared 15 wonderful years. Playing Pa and Honeybee to Barry's grandchildren later in life was one of Susan's greatest joys.
In 2022, Susan was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Although it was a roadblock, she found the strength to keep running by drawing peace and inspiration from her deepening relationship with God.
Throughout her life, Susan was honored by numerous charities for her philanthropic work - most recently with a tree dedication at the Gronk Playground in Boston, which she helped build along the Charles River for all children to enjoy.
Family, friends, and runners will remember Susan fondly for her energy, commitment, and wisdom - a mother and cheerleader to all. She made the world a better place and everyone around her better people. Although she passed at 62, her life was full.
Susan was preceded in death by her father, James Hurley. She is survived by her two children, Ryan McGillivray and Max McGillivray; daughters-in-law, Courtney McGillivray and Kristin Curtis; sisters, Lisa (Jesse) First, Mary (Tim) Hurley, and Cheryl (Greg) Cuoco; nieces, Julia and Isabella Cuoco; mother, Sylvia Hurley; lifelong best friend, Dave (Katie) McGillivray, and his children - Elle, Luke, and Chloe McGillivray; fiancé, Barry Foland, and his children - Carly Foland, Morgan Quinn, and Jason Foland.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 8th at 10 AM at Waters Church Norwood (668 Walpole St, Norwood, MA 02062), followed by a reception at The West Club at Gillette Stadium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to any of the charitable causes she championed through CharityTeams. In the coming weeks, Susan's family will be establishing a charitable fund in her name. More details on how to give and the purpose of the fund will be shared soon. Thoughts and prayers are with Susan and her family. Susan always displayed positive, energy, strength, and dedication everywhere she went. I remember we did a practice, 15-mile run on a cold, March day. However, Susan was just full of positivity and was a bright positive light, cheering us on! Susan, thank you for giving me the chance to run Boston. It was so empowering to run alongside my sister, team MR8, and the BPL. You made the self-doubting, bushy-eyebrow, kid feel like a superhero. Your kindness, dedication, and impact will never be forgotten. God bless you and your family.

Words can´t explain what a difference Susan made in my life - and Kevin´s. Her persistence in working to get Kevin and I into a position to run Boston launched an ongoing friendship of more than 11 years, 16 marathons and countless memories. We´ll never forget your kindness and passion for others.

2 Timothy 4:7 to 8 (NIV) " I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous Judge, will award unto me on that day ".

God Bless!

Susan didn´t let me give up when I thought I couldn´t run the marathon. She lifted me up with her kindness, encouragement, and unwavering belief that I could do more than I ever thought possible. Her light and positive energy touched everyone she met, making each of us on the charity teams feel truly special. I can´t begin to measure the good she brought into this world. I only know how profoundly she changed my little corner of it. I pray she´s resting in Heaven, surrounded by all the joy, love, and peace she gave so freely here on earth.

I never thought his day would come. Susan was such spitfire and a force, the word "can't" just simply wasn't in her vocabulary. She made such a positive impact on the running community and so many local charities. And she cared deeply for each and every one of her runners. I am not sure what the world will look without her, but I know she would want us to keep going, keep running, keep fundraising, keep supporting one another, keep smiling, keep showing up & keep putting one foot in front of the other. I will miss my friend.

I grew up with all the "Hurley girls" living across the street. I have so many first day of school pics with all of us. She was a beautiful person - inside and out. Susan, as with all her sisters, we're brought up by two wonderful parents. They instilled in her the values that made her who she was to become - a vibrant, caring, thoughtful person who helped so many over the years. RIP my friend - your smile will never be forgotten.

I will never be able to put into words the profound impact Susan had on my life. In 2015, Susan provided me with an opportunity to run the Boston Marathon for one of her non-profit charities and I will be forever grateful.

Last Sunday, the world lost one of those people we need more of.

Susan´s impact went well beyond running. Over these last 10 years, when I struggled in private with a life challenge, she could always sense something was going on and would give me a call or grab a coffee to talk things through.

People that know me, often wonder, why do you love running so much? Susan Hurley and the community she formed is that reason. From the moment I walked into my first run with her group in 2016, I knew this is where I was meant to be.

I´ve tried all week to stay positive, because that´s what Susan would have wanted. The loss so many of us feel is immeasurable.

Susan´s legacy will live on forever, but the Boston Marathon will never quite be the same without her physical presence.

Thank you, Susan for all you did.

She used to give me a hard time for all the photos, but I´m grateful to have 100s to remember the good times.
