Susan Shopsis, of Old Bridge, New Jersey, formerly of Brooklyn, New York, passed away peacefully on October 17th, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on March 29, 1941, in Brooklyn, Susan was the daughter of the late Aaron and Yetta Stone.
Susan was a proud graduate of Brooklyn College, where she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees. She devoted much of her career to helping others, working for many years at The Lighthouse Guild in Manhattan as a dietitian and nutritionist for the blind. She also taught braille, sharing her patience, compassion, and knowledge with those who needed it most.
After moving to Old Bridge in 1992, Susan continued to surround herself with friends, family, and the animals she loved. Known for her kindness and gentle heart, she had a special love for animals, rescuing greyhounds and cherishing her cats over the years, Nicky, Spirit, Nathaniel, Isabella, and Sunny Boy. She also had a creative spirit, learning to play the xylophone later in life and taking great joy in it.
Susan cherished her lifelong friendship with Marjorie Harriz. The two grew up together on Bushwick Avenue in Brooklyn and remained best friends for 75 years, a bond that was truly remarkable and filled with love, laughter, and shared memories.
She was predeceased by her parents, Aaron and Yetta, her brother Steven, and sister-in-law Marsha. She is lovingly remembered by her nephew Brian and his wife Allyson; their children Brianna (husband Cedric and children Aaliyah and Carter), Kayla (husband James and children Ariyah and Jimel), Hannah, Marissa, and Alexa; and her nephew Ian (wife Elvia and children Tiffany and Steven).
Susan's thoughtful nature, generosity, and quiet strength touched everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by her family, friends, and all the lives she enriched.
Private services will be held at Mount Zion Cemetery in Maspeth, New York.
Donations in her honor may be made to Old Bridge Animal Shelter. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Susan Shopsis, please visit our floral store.
