Susan Smith Obituary

Susan Maude Smith was born Feb. 14, 1951, in Plymouth, New Hampshire, to Stafford and June (Stevens) Smith. She was called to heaven suddenly on Oct. 28, 2025, in Damascus, Oregon.

Her greatest joy in life was being 'Mammie'. She was a woman of grit and grace, who loved fiercely and poured into the people who needed her most.

As the youngest of 8 siblings, she became the natural caretaker of everyone around her.

Susan married her high school sweetheart, Lewis Wright, in 1968, and they had three children. Together, they built a successful auto repair business that took them to Portland, OR, where they settled their family in the mid-1970s. Susan served in corrections for nearly 20 years before returning home to New Hampshire to care for her parents in their final years. Once she returned to Portland, she found the joy of driving for Portland Tri-Met. She was proud to help and serve 'her people' in the community through lift-bus transit until she retired.

She collected pink hats and loved to teach her grandchildren how to cook and bake. Her kitchen was always filled with more than the smell of something delicious. She'd be singing, dancing, and whistling along, turning everyday moments into memories.

She is survived by her brother, Gene, and sister, Mary. Children: Christopher (Karen) Wright, Jennifer (James) MacKay, Aimee Wright. Grandchildren: Audrea (Cassy) Nordstrom, Justine (Kyle) Utley, Joseph Wright, Joshua (Dallas) MacKay, David (Ellie) Wright, Ahliah (Rylie) Nordstrom, and great-grandchildren: Ava Nordstrom, Waylon, and Wrenna Utley.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Stafford and June Smith. Husband, Lewis Wright. Siblings Ruth, Glen, Anne, Richard, and Paul.

There will be a graveside service for her when she is taken back home to New Hampshire in the spring.
