Susan Smith Obituary

Visit the Larkin Sunset Lawn - Salt Lake City website to view the full obituary.
Susan Eleanor Blair Smith (Sue, Susie, Mom, Grammy, Meme) passed away on March 15, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 29, 1933, in Salt Lake City to Seth Harvey Blair Jr. and Florence Elnora Herrick Blair.

Susan married her sweetheart, James Stull Smith, on September 4, 1953, in the Salt Lake Temple. Their romance began when they met at a sorority and fraternity social, and together they shared 58 years of marriage before his passing on April 11, 2012.

Susan was the devoted mother of seven children: Jeffrey (Mardene) Smith, Rebecca (James) Scott, Matthew (Cynthia) Smith, Tamara Smith, Jennifer Smith, Timothy (Melinda) Smith, and Amie (Charles) Williamson. Her posterity was one of her greatest joys. She was blessed with 27 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three grandchildren Shannon Doyle, Heather Mayhugh, and Talmage Smith.

She is also survived by the Paul and Patty Dodge family and her sister, Kristine (Robert) Williams. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Blair, and her sister, Bonnie Blair.

Susan was a lifelong, faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served wherever she was asked and loved serving in the Primary in her later years. She was a member of the Salt Lake Parleys Stake for 68 years. She had a deep love for her Savior and found great joy in studying the gospel and participating in temple work. She and her husband also served together as ordinance workers in the Salt Lake Temple. They also served as Welfare Square missionaries helping people to develop skills and find employment. She was a long-time member of the daughters of Utah Pioneers. In recent years, she cherished the friendships she developed with the women in her ward as they gathered for lunches, rides in convertibles and temple visits together.

Known for her beauty and sense of style, Susan was a true "glamour girl." She loved the color pink and pampered herself with weekly hair appointments. She loved getting manicures and pedicures, especially if a daughter or granddaughter went with her. She also had many creative interests, including decorating and doing crafts. She was a voracious reader who loved swapping book recommendations with her sister and granddaughters. Her reading always included something gospel related.

Susan was a hardworking and devoted mother who worked as an executive assistant for several companies and organizations throughout her life. Above all else, she loved her family deeply. Family gatherings and visits from her children and grandchildren brought her immense happiness. Grandchildren loved sleep overs at her house, especially when the mornings meant waking up to a stack of pancakes and jars of Gram Jam. The pancake eating contests were legendary.

Susan will be remembered as beautiful, kind, intelligent, and deeply loving. Her legacy of faith, devotion to family, and warmth toward others will live on in the many lives she touched.

Her funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Parley's 5th Ward Building (2615 Stringham Ave. Salt Lake City, UT 84109).
