SMULLEN, Susan Claire aged 81

Nov 8, 1943-Aug 4, 2025

Susan Claire Smullen died peacefully in Reston, Virginia on August 4 while in hospice.

Susan, daughter of Robert Norman and Marion Claire (Newbill) Kiehne, was born in Cleveland, Ohio while her father was in the Army Air Corp during World War II. As a young child, she lived in Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Biloxi, but settled in Shaker Heights, Ohio where she attended Shaker High School. She married George Arthur Smullen (1939-1978) in 1961 and had two daughters, Barbara Ann and Christina Marie.

Susan and her family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1975 where George died of heart disease. After his death, Susan worked her worked her way up to a management position at the Marina Bay Resort Hotel, and later Lavers Resort in Delray Beach, Florida. When her daughters were grown, she moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where she met and married her second husband, Tony Lamarr Cannon. Together they enjoyed life in Tennessee, New Orleans, and Gainesville, Georgia.

Susan retired in 2005 and later reunited with her dear high school friend, Susan (Corle) Costlow-Leeds where they shared a home in Georgia. Susan moved to Virginia in 2022 to be near her daughter, Christina.

Susan was very independent and took meticulous care of her home. She loved reading, needlework, gardening, and more recently, stamp collecting. She had few close friends, but those were very dear to her, and she could talk with them for hours on the phone about family matters and world events. Most of all, Susan loved her dear pets, especially her little maltipoo named Nelson.

Susan leaves behind her two daughters, Barbara and Chistina, her brother Rob Kiehne, and her cousin Stephen Ginal, her dear friend Kathy Haserot and her kitty, Shelly.

As per Susan's wishes, there will be no services.
