Susan (Sue) Marie Spence, 76, of
Brighton, MI passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026. She was a cherished mother to Kelly and grandmother to Londyn and her presence will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She battled heart disease and met her final days with courage, faith and grace. She was predeceased by her husband Ralph Spence and parents Esther and William McCabe. As Sue advanced in years, she dedicated her life to family. Her daughter, Kelly's child, Londyn, was the apple of Sue's eye. She loved caring for and bragging about her granddaughter.
Sue graduated from Ladywood High School--a private all-girls Catholic School. She took her first job at Wayne State University in the Accounting Department. After meeting her future husband Ralph, she took over the bookkeeping for his business after his mother, who managed his business affairs, passed. She continued to handle the billing and bookkeeping for R. P. Spence, Inc. until the business was liquidated.
Sue was a flower child of the 60's-characterized by her long red hair, vibrant alternative clothing and love of rock music. She was a standout at music festivals and local music venues (i.e. Grande Ballroom, Grande Riveria, Eastown, Roostertail). Her love of music continued throughout her life as Sue continued to attend concerts.
One of Sue's passions was traveling. Sue, Ralph and Kelly took annual cruises each winter while her husband's work was on hiatus and enjoyed exotic places like Tahiti. She enjoyed researching and planning their trips. Sue enjoyed short getaways often going to hotels in the St. Clair/Port Huron area with her husband and their close friends Doug & Sharon Kirkpatrick. After Ralph's passing, she continued to plan weekend trips to St. Clair with her girlfriends.
In her retirement years, Sue enjoyed travelling with her childhood friend, Michelle Malinowski. They took a memorable Mediterranean cruise and touched down in places like
Venice, Barcelona, Rome--always adding extra time to various cities at the front/back of their cruise. Her most memorable cruise with Michelle was 7 weeks of travel where they spent time in Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii.
Sue had a green thumb and loved to garden. Her homes in Redford and Brighton both had built in pools, and she loved to keep them surrounded by potted plants/flowers. Sue and Ralph did a lot of entertaining poolside or indoors during the Winter months. They were party people!
Sue was an independent woman. She had a take charge approach to life and managed all household affairs-both before and after her husband's passing. She was on top of everything! She prided herself in significantly reducing the bad debts on the books at R. P. Spence, Inc.
After Ralph's passing, Sue became more connected to her friends and they often met up for lunch or Happy Hour. As Sue advanced in years, she dedicated her life to family. Kelly's child, Londyn, was the apple of her eye. Sue loved caring for and spending time with her granddaughter.
