Susan Carol Todd was born on November 18, 1951, in Jefferson Davis County to Malcolm and Willie Agnes Polk Speights. A graduate of Bassfield High School, Susan continued her studies at Pearl River Jr. College. Afterward, she began her professional journey with Mississippi Vocational Rehabilitation Services in September of 1976. Her early years were spent at the VR office located on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi, where she devoted herself to assisting individuals with disabilities. After nine rewarding years, she transitioned to working for the VR deaf program, demonstrating her adaptability and commitment to advocate for the rights and rehabilitation of all individuals facing challenges. Over the course of her impressive career, Susan collaborated with numerous counselors of the Mississippi Vocational Rehabilitation program and played a vital role in supporting many District Managers. Her dedication and hard work enabled countless individuals with disabilities throughout the state to receive the support they needed, empowering them to reintegrate into the workforce and lead fulfilling lives.
Although she had several interests, Susan loved spending cherished moments on the family farm in Carson. She also enjoyed her serene time on the deck beside the pool, surrounded by her beautiful potted plants.
Family held a special place in Susan’s heart. Kitty, her beloved sister, fondly recalls the day Susan was born, remembering how she felt blessed to welcome her new sister, who quickly became like her very own baby doll. Their bond was exceptionally strong, filled with warmth and laughter, particularly during the holiday gatherings at Kitty's home on Christmas Eve. Kitty’s nurturing role in Susan's life created memories of love that will forever echo within their family. Ms. Todd was a member of Bassfield Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Susan is preceded in death by both of her children, Amanda Gail Todd and Clint Todd; her grandson, Christian Liam Whitley; sisters, Rebecca Doris Borger, Martha Faye Speights and her brother, Harry Speights.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her beloved companion of 40 years, Walker Hendrix of Hattiesburg; her grandchildren, Peyton Todd of Petal, Nathan Whitley (McKinley) of Brandon; and her sister, Kitty Berteau (Gary) of Carson.
