Susan Yamashita Obituary

Susan Walsh Yamashita, known as Sue, was born on June 7, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois. She passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025, in Olney, Maryland, leaving behind a legacy filled with love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.

Sue's life was defined by her deep commitment to service, both in her career and personal pursuits. With a passion for medicine and a desire to help others, she spent over 15 years working as a surgical assistant, where her skills and compassionate nature made a profound impact on the lives she touched. She found fulfillment in serving her community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT for 25 years where she joined the Burke Volunteer Fire Department in the 1970s as one of the first females to volunteer and later worked with the Centreville Volunteer Fire Department. She also spent time as a school nurse and writing children's books as ways to constantly give unto others.

A woman of remarkable kindness, Sue was known for her selflessness and her genuine desire to spread love. She always put her family first, but cared for everyone. She often hosted holiday meals that brought together extended family and friends, ensuring that no one felt alone. Memories of her warm gatherings are cherished by her family, who will forever hold dear the spirit of togetherness and joy that she fostered. Sue's boundless affection never went unnoticed; her loved ones often referred to her as their guardian angel, reflecting the comfort and support she provided throughout their lives.

Sue's proudest accomplishments were her children and grandchildren: Tim, John, Kate, and grandchildren Corinne, Telly, Milana, Everly, and great-granddaughter Natalie. Each of them carries a piece of her vibrant spirit within them, a testament to her success as a mother and grandmother.

She faced several hardships the last few years; however, her strength and resilience shone brightly, as she faced life's challenges with grace, remaining strong until the very end. Sue will be deeply missed but her legacy of love, kindness, and service will live on in the hearts of those she touched. She inspired all to embrace life fully and to extend a helping hand. May her spirit rest peacefully as we remember a life beautifully lived.

She is survived by her beloved children Tim, John, and Kate; her daughters-in-law Kendra and Layla; her grandchildren Corinne, Telly, Milana, and Everly; and her great-granddaughter Natalie. She also leaves behind her brother, Rick. Preceding her in death was her cherished husband, Ted Yamashita.

A visitation to celebrate Sue's life will be held on September 26, 2025, from 9:45 AM to 10:15 AM at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More, located at 3901 Cathedral Ln, Arlington, VA. This will be followed by a Mass from 10:15 AM to 11:00 AM.
