Suzanne Andrea Buras leaves behind an inspirational legacy of kindness, love, and steadfast loyalty-beautifully lived out in her devotion to her students, colleagues, friends, and family. Born on February 15, 1952, in New Orleans, she entered the presence of her Lord and Savior on (date) in
Covington, Louisiana, following a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and pancreatic cancer-an illness she faced with remarkable strength, grace, and unwavering faith.
Suzanne was the cherished daughter of Harold and Madeline Buras, who instilled in her a deep sense of integrity, compassion, and faith through their patient and loving guidance. She shared a lifelong bond with her beloved sister, Pamela, who faithfully watched over and supported her younger sister with constant love and devotion.
A true "people person," Suzanne had an extraordinary gift for connection. She loved deeply, laughed easily, and lived creatively. Playful yet disciplined, gentle yet strong, she brought both joy and purpose to every space she entered. When once asked what she hoped her legacy would be, Suzanne answered simply and profoundly: "Relationship with my students." For 25 years, she poured her heart into teaching elementary gifted students and also served as a District Trainer for Technology. Her students adored "Miss Buras," often saying, "She always made everyone feel loved," and "You knew she truly cared about us." Those words were perhaps her greatest honor. Her fellow teachers greatly respected and admired Suzanne, not only as an educator, but also as a cherished and loyal friend who was incredibly intentional about keeping old friends in her life through all of life's seasons.
Suzanne's excellence in education was widely recognized. She was named LHMS Teacher of the Year and St. Tammany Parish Teacher of the Year. In 2003, she was awarded the Louisiana State Teacher of the Year distinction, and in 2006 she received the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, culminating in being honored at the White House-a testament to her extraordinary impact in the classroom.
The guiding force of Suzanne's life was her deep and abiding love for Jesus Christ. For 25 years, she faithfully taught adult Sunday School, pouring Scripture, wisdom, and encouragement into countless lives. Friends and colleagues often reflected, "Suzanne's faith was her reality, and her life of faith transformed those around her." She did not merely speak of faith-----she embodied it.
Beyond the classroom and church, Suzanne was a gifted artist and accomplished pianist. She delighted in the adventure of travel, exploring other countries with curiosity and wonder. She also held a special passion for training horses, embracing both the discipline and beauty of the craft.
Suzanne's life was marked by love given freely, faith lived authentically, and relationships nurtured intentionally. Her legacy endures in the countless lives she shaped, the hearts she encouraged, and the faith she so beautifully reflected.
Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents Sara Madeline Cox Buras and Harold Andre Buras. She is survived by her sister, Pamela Madeline Erler-Garvey and son-in-law, Michael Kelly Garvey, Covington Louisiana.
