Suzanne Deuchler Obituary

Suzanne Louise Deuchler of Aurora, Illinois died on June 24, 2022 at the age of 92. Suzanne was born on July 21, 1929 in Chicago, the eldest of two daughters of Elvin and Margaret Clark. The family moved to Shelbyville, Illinois in 1937 where Suzanne spent her formative years until she enrolled in the University of Illinois. There, she met and married her husband, Walter, and both graduated with honors in 1951.

After spending a few years in Dayton, Ohio where Walter served as an engineer in the U.S. Air Force, Suzanne and Walter built their home on Garfield Avenue in Aurora where they resided for 67 years. Suzanne's active involvement in the AAUW and League of Women Voters led her to become engaged in politics.

Suzanne was elected to four years on the Kane County Board before she ran and won election to the Illinois State House of Representatives. She served her District there for 18 years, earning herself the nickname "the Bulldog" for her determined pursuit of legislative priorities. She championed a variety of causes, including education, business, conservation and women's rights. She did not shy away from forming political alliances across party lines to win passage of important initiatives, such as the effort she spearheaded to found the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy.

Suzanne was also a world traveler, a talented watercolorist, and a mother of two. She served as President of the local chapter of the League of Women Voters and on many nonprofit boards, including NAMI Kane-South Dekalb and Kendall, the Aurora Historical Society, Rush Copley Medical Center Governing Board and Sci-Tech Museum.

She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Walter Deuchler, her sister Nancy Clark Amstutz, her daughter Maryll (Tom) Moon, her granddaughters Erika Kleibrink and Claudia Moon, her nieces Betsy (Donald) Flett and Kathy Finn, and nephews Edward (Robyn Weinstein) Bettenhausen and Kenneth (Jean) Bettenhausen.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in Suzanne's honor are welcome to Planned Parenthood of Illinois (17 N. State Street., 5th Fl., Chicago, IL 60602) and the League of Women Voters of Illinois (332 S. Michigan Ave., Ste. 634, Chicago, IL 60604).

Suzanne was one of the nicest women I have ever met. Sue and I served together in the House of Representatives, though on opposite sides of the aisle. I will always appreciate my time spent in her company. She had a real servant's heart.
