Suzanne Grandis Obituary

Suzanne H. Grandis

March 5, 1947 - January 31, 2025

Grandis, Suzanne H., 77, died peacefully at her home on January 31, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Suzanne was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leslie Grandis; and by her parents, Natalie and C.F. Hannabass. Suzanne is survived by her two children, Eve G. Campbell and her husband, Dan Simons, and David C. Grandis, and his wife, Meade; as well as four grandchildren, Walker Campbell, Hatcher Campbell, Eleanor Grandis and Cardwell Grandis. Suzanne is also survived by her six brothers and sisters, Mary Lou Barritt (Sid), Natalie Rude (Bob), Billy Hannabass (Linda), Ellen Edmonds (Steve), Cardie Hannabass (June), and John Hannabass (Karen).

Suzanne graduated from Randolph Macon Women's College in 1969 and pursued a master's degree in art history in the 1970s from Virginia Commonwealth University. As a talented artist, Suzanne painted many beautiful paintings throughout her life, winning awards for her work.

Suzanne was a devoted supporter of the Richmond Ballet for almost her entire life. Dancing for the Richmond Ballet in its early days, she later became a trustee of the Ballet and a supporter of the founding of the School of Richmond Ballet, the first not-for-profit dance training facility in Virginia. She served as the Ballet photographer for 30 years and received a standing ovation at the opening night of the Richmond Ballet's 2007-2008 season for her dedication to archiving the early history of the company through her photographs. She was on the Board that oversaw the Ballet from a small civic company to a nationally and internationally recognized fully professional ballet organization. She was honored at the June 6, 2024 annual meeting for both her longevity and commitment at the Richmond Ballet.

Suzanne also was an avid and talented golfer. She enjoyed memberships at the Country Club of Virginia, Bayville Golf Club and Ocean Reef Club. A tough competitor, Suzanne seldom missed the fairway and had an immaculate short game, all contributing to her name on many trophies, including the 2015 Triple Golf Classic, the 2016 Carysfort Cup, the 2017 Triple Golf Classic and the 2024 Keys Cup Match Play, to name a few. She was proud to have four hole-in-ones and was quick to update her license plate to reflect her latest ace.

Suzanne is now reunited with Les, and they are playing the best golf courses in the world.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. A celebration of Suzanne's life will take place at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 12291 River Road, Richmond, Va. 23238, on Friday, February 7 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Richmond Ballet or St. Mary's Episcopal Church.

During the time I lived and worked in Richmond, from 1977-86, Suzanne was a dear friend and great support. She contributed so much energy and support to RB, not to mention her outstanding photography skills. She was beautiful, extremely talented, generous of time and talent, a lovely person with a beautiful soul. She and funny, witty Les and their friendship was one of the bright spots of my Richmond years. Thanks and God Bless dear friends.

I was so blessed to have known Suzanne! My daughter and I spent the first weeks of our move to Richmond at her home with her wonderfully family and their cat named Max. Her photos of the Richmond Ballet were beautiful as well as her own paintings. As the years went on I also spent time staying with her when I would visit Richmond. She was so kind and generous and an amazing hostess. Thank you for being such a lovely lady! I will never forget you Suzanne...
