Syble Carson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service - Charlotte on Mar. 3, 2026.
CHARLOTTE - Syble Balentine Carson of Charlotte died on Feb. 27, 2026, and journeyed to her heavenly home.

The oldest child of LW and Marilee Balentine, Syble grew up in Charlotte and graduated from Central High School before attending the University of Arkansas and studying abroad in Italy.

Syble went on to have careers in banking, advertising and real estate. She was a proud hospital volunteer at facilities including the Naval Station Great Lakes Hospital and Charlotte Rehab Hospital, and she served as a mentor to children in the Seigle Avenue community.

In 1970, Syble married the love of her life, Jim Carson, and they enjoyed 45 years of marriage before his death in 2015. In addition to their full lives in Charlotte, they spent time in Raleigh and traveled North Carolina on the campaign trail as Jim served in the state House of Representatives, as a judge on the state Court of Appeals and as North Carolina's attorney general. Syble was a member of the Sir Walter Cabinet, open to spouses of state officials.

A woman of great faith, Syble was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church where she served on the vestry, as a lay minister at Southminster and as a leader within Episcopal Church Women. She was known for authoring and delivering a great many homilies, devotions and prayers throughout her years.

Together with Jim, Syble enjoyed travel from Alaska to the Florida Keys. She was an accomplished fisherwoman, including achieving a Grand Slam of catching a tarpon, permit and bonefish in one day. She was a member of Charlotte Country Club and a spirited presence on the tennis courts.

Syble's service and leadership also extended to the Charlotte Museum of History board of trustees, the Halifax Convention Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Charlotte Junior League and her social community at 800 Cherokee.

Syble was loyal, generous, stylish and vivacious. She cherished her family and held a deep love for her wide circle of friends from all stages of her life.

Syble is predeceased by her parents, her husband and her brother-in-law, Don Swofford. She is survived by her daughter Page Carson Rogers (Rick) of Charlotte; stepdaughters Christy Carson Evans (Bruce) of Arlington, VA, and Read Carson Van de Water (Mark) of Warrenton, VA; granddaughters Carson Rogers Peacock (Bryce) of Charlotte and Mary Summers Rogers Plepler (Jonny) of Washington, D.C.; great-granddaughter Georgia Peacock; sister Selina Balentine Swofford and brother Leonard Balentine (Linda) of Charlotte; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A service to celebrate Syble's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2026 at Christ Episcopal Church with a reception immediately following. The service will be livestreamed on the church's website for those who are unable to attend.

Her family would like to thank her medical team of doctors and home therapists and the wonderful hospice care of Via Health Partners. In particular, Syble's team of caregivers were angels on earth who provided dignity, compassion and humor in her final years and days, including Miata Bonwicker, Brenda Davenport, Beverly Hamilton, Rosa Nash, Ginette Prisme, Ebony Smith and Ruth Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Syble's memory can be made to Via Health Partners (www.viagiving.org) or Christ Church ECW (1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC, 28207).
