Sydna Howard Mersereau, 91, of Goodyear, Arizona, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 14, 2024. Born in Newton, Massachusetts, on May 30, 1933. She was the third of six children and grew up in Massachusetts and Maine.
A proud graduate of Saco, Maine's Thornton Academy in 1949, Sydna pursued higher education at Bowling Green University in Ohio, earning a degree in Broadcast Journalism in 1952. In 1953, she married the love of her life, Gage Mersereau, and became part of a dedicated military family with assignments all over the world, including Goose Bay Labrador, Italy, Greece, Colorado Springs, and finally, Phoenix. Together with their two children Kay and Gage, they built a life rooted in love, faith, and service.
Sydna was a dedicated professional who chose to work to keep her mind active and engaged. Her professions included: Radio Host, School Teacher, Travel Agent, Realtor, Book Editor, and Executive at Electronic Data Systems (EDS). Her final, and most loved position, was serving as the treasurer for Pebble Creek Community Church from 2000 until her recent passing.
Known for her adventurous spirit, she engaged in a wide variety of activities and interests, including Duplicate Bridge, chair yoga, golf, the latest movies (at the theatre), live Broadway, dining out, and the New York Times crossword. Sydna was an avid traveler, and enjoyed many cruises and trips with her family.
She was a passionate gardener and collected pots and artifacts from her worldwide travels which she used to adorn her home and garden. Her ethnic, eclectic environment was filled with beauty, love, and zebra print, which made everyone feel welcome. She delighted in her birdhouse collection, finding joy in the hummingbirds and other species that frequented her feeders.
Sydna was an inspired "Fashionista" who took pride in dressing beautifully. She had her own unique style and used her vast collection of accessories to make every outfit a work of art. You never saw Sydna in jeans and t-shirt. She was always fully turned out, we all used to anticipate seeing what her next, great outfit would be.
Sydna was the epitome of health, embracing a fulfilling daily routine centered on health and wellness. One of her biggest joys was her water aerobics class where she gathered with friends three times a week to exercise and swap stories of her latest adventures. Her doctor said she was a "super ager"in the 1% of 91 year olds, and wished she could "clone" her recipe for life.
She will be remembered with admiration as a woman who lived a spirited and fulfilled life. Sydna was a loving and supportive wife and mother, a successful businesswoman, and a faithful servant of the Lord.
Sydna was predeceased by her parents (Eleanor Howard Milliken and Joseph Leonard Howard Sr.), her beloved husband Gage, and her four brothers (Bud, John, Art, and Tom). She is survived by her sister (Ann), her daughter and son (Kay and Gage), her son-in-law (Ian), and twelve admiring nieces and nephews who carry forward her legacy of love, grace, and kindness.
Her family invites all who knew her to celebrate her remarkable life.
