Sylvester Cotton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Westside Funeral Home - Palmetto on Dec. 6, 2025.
Sylvester Cotton was born on January 22nd 1940, in Palmetto, Florida to the late Juel and Mariah Cotton. He earned his wings when he passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 25th, 2025.

Sylvester attended Lincoln Memorial High School in Palmetto, Florida and went on to attend and graduate from Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida. After college he was drafted to the United States Army where he served for two years. He received an honorable discharge.

In 1966, he moved to Naples, Florida to marry his college sweetheart, Doris Anthony. Of that union, two beautiful children were born – Lavonda Syvette Cotton and Laquentin Genard Cotton.

Sylvester worked for the City of Naples for 20 years until retirement. He was an active member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, and was bestowed the title of Decon. After retirement, Sylvester devoted a tremendous amount of time planting a garden, and often shared his harvest with members of the community. He played "Soul Santa" for the River Park Community for over 20 years, along with his wife as Mr. & Mrs. Clause.

Sylvester, affectionally known as "Uncle Punkin" to his Palmetto Crew, enjoyed family time with his wonderful nieces and nephews. He poured love into each of them without fail. His kindness was widespread. He exemplified what a committed husband, father, grandfather uncle and friend is. He will be deeply missed.

Sylvester was preceded in death by his wife, Doris A. Cotton, his sisters Hattie Duval, Jean Crayton, and Rosalee Randall-Mays, and his brother Willie Jenkins. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving children Lavonda Cotton and Laquentin Cotton; two grandchildren, Christina Mariah Harbor and Jonathan Quinn Harbor; one special great-grandson, Samtavious Devonte Brunson; and his "Palmetto Crew"
