Sylvester Derico Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Chapel on Feb. 3, 2026.
Sylvester Derico was born in Pompano Beach, Florida, to the parentage of Emma and C. D. Derico on January 26, 1953. He was the fourth oldest of ten children, and raised in a large, close-knit family rooted in faith, love, and strong values. From an early age, Sylvester, affectionately known as Sly, was taught to honor the heritage of prayer, honesty, and integrity into which he was born. His parents recognized the importance of
exposing him to many different aspects of life, preparing him spiritually and emotionally for the journey ahead.
Sylvester received his formal primary and secondary education in the Broward County Public School System and proudly graduated from Pompano Senior High School, Class of 1972. Following graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy, where he built a distinguished career marked by discipline, dedication, and honor. During his 20 years of military service, Sylvester traveled the world and served with excellence. After retiring from the Navy, he continued his commitment to service, working as a Chief Security Officer at Edward Waters College, where his leadership and vigilance were deeply respected.
Sylvester stood tall as a man of integrity with an unwavering love for his family and friends. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone he encountered. Sly was intentional about making a positive impact on the lives of others, leaving lasting impressions wherever he went.
He met and married Jackie Robinson, and to this union one child was born, Nikisha Derico. Both his wife and daughter preceded him in death.
Sly spent his life serving humanity with passion and vigor. His spirit of resilience and good humor carried him through life's challenges, and through every encounter he inspired others to fulfill their life's purpose. His commitment to being a great
humanitarian allowed him to foster meaningful relationships across the world.

To the family of Sly. I served with Derico in Barber Point Hawaii from 1972 to 1975. We were both loadmaster of the C-118. Sly was funny and personable and a good athlete, as we played together on our championship football team. My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to you all during this time of bereavement. My prayers are with you.

To the family and everyone who knew Sly. "Forever in our hearts." He was a good friend-caring, kind, and so much fun to be around. Sly knew everyone in Sweetwater. He was like the Ambassador of Sweetwater. We were neighbors for over 44 years and he will be deeply and greatly missed.

With Deepest Condolences and Love,

Lawrence & Arlinda Rahim and family
