Sy and I were room mates at Mount Union. I am reminded of this Poem:
A good man never dies--
In worthy deed and prayer
And helpful hands, and honest eyes,
If smiles or tears be there:
Who lives for you and me--
Lives for the world he tries
To help--he lives eternally.
A good man never dies.
Who lives to bravely take
His share of toil and stress,
And, for his weaker fellows' sake,
Makes every burden less,--
He may, at last, seem worn--
Lie fallen--hands and eyes
Folded--yet, though we mourn and mourn,
A good man never dies.A Good Man by James Whitcomb Riley

I just found out of Sy's passing in the Mount Union Alumni magazine. I am shocked. We met in 1960. Sy was a quiet powerful guy. He, Harold Riggle and David Mooney were the lynch pins upon which the still very successful Mount Union track and field program was built. Later in life he visited me in Williamsburg, Virginia. Later still he walked into my brother Bruce's memorial service in Washington DC and reduced me to tears. Later still he and I were the honorary starters for the Homecoming 5K Run. Following we walked arm in arm about the campus and told stories. Had I known I would for sure have been in Baltimore for his memorial service. God bless you Sy. I'll see you down The Road. To Kim and family I send my very best wishes. Stephen D Harris MU'63
I found this photo from 1963. Left to right...Jim Schermesser, Nate Hawthorne, David Mooney, Tom Kellogg and Sylvester Green...the Mount Union 4x100 and 4x440 relay team. Champions!!!

RIP SY, thank you for taking an interest in my career when I was much younger. You were the classiest man I ever worked for and with.

A man of great character, and great listener. I had the privilege of serving with Sy on the Mount Union Board of Trustees. I truly enjoyed my time with him.

Sy was an amazing mentor to me when I first joined the Board of Trustees at Mount Union. I felt a bit like a square peg in a round hole as I had opinions that many on the Board did not share. Sy encouraged me to bring and offer those opinions without reserve. My sincerest sympathy for your loss.
