Sylvester Green

Sy Green was known for his strong character, warm and kind spirit and his unwavering dedication to his family, friends and colleagues. He was born in Anderson, South Carolina on July 5, 1940 to Wes and Crenell (Norris) Green. After his family left the South, he was raised in Sandusky, Ohio with his four siblings, James, John, Rosina, and Cathreen. He often reflected on the early loss of three of his siblings and assumed the responsibility and commitment to their families over the years. He was proud to be the "Uncle and Advisor" to all of them, and it became his inspiration to continue to thrive and "raise the bar. " Many would describe him as a gentleman and calm figure that commanded the room when he entered and greeted everyone with a smile and a kind approachable spirit.
Sy graduated from Mount Union College where he was an all-star athlete. He was a high jumper on the track-and-field team, track star (sprinter), as well as a stellar competitive basketball player. Sy was known to be an "Athletic Scholar" and was proud of being one of the four Black students at his college located in rural Alliance, Ohio. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Sandusky High School as well as Mount Union College.
Sy carried his college success into his professional career. He was a distinguished Chubb executive for over 35 years, known for his strategic acumen, keen business judgment and compassionate and empathetic leadership. He began his career at Chubb as a management trainee in the Commercial Casualty division. While accomplishing many "firsts," including being named the first Black Managing Director of Chubb Corp/ Chubb & Son Inc., Sy rose through Chubb's hierarchy, leveling barriers and defying expectations with each new step. As executive vice president and managing director, Green had oversight of 56 branch offices representing approximately $4.6 billion in property and casualty insurance.
Sy had many interests and enjoyed sharing his experiences with family and friends. He was an avid golfer with a competitive handicap who enjoyed traveling with his Casa de Campo golfers over many years. He was an active and longstanding member and served as an officer of the Westchester NY Sigma Pi Phi fraternity and the Connecticut Chapter of the National Guardsmen Association. Sy was known to be a great dancer and loved showing off his moves to Motown tunes. He loved traveling with his family to new and different destinations. He was focused on fitness and health and continued to love running and exercising throughout his lifetime. He took on skiing in his later years, discovering another outdoor physical activity to enjoy. Sy loved celebrating his birthday, which was over the Fourth of July holiday, with his dear sister, Cathreen (Cat) and the Ohio crew. His greatest joy centered around his daughters and granddaughters whether it was watching Jessica in the equestrian world in the early years, spending time with Jennifer and his two granddaughters, Laila and Amira, and celebrating graduations and major milestones as a family, there was simply nothing better.
Sy is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Kim Mumby Green, his son, Jason Green, two daughters Jennifer Green Williams (Marquis), Jessica Green (Leuk), five grandchildren, Casey Green, Devin Green, Tyler Green, Amira Williams, Laila Williams, two great grandchildren, Anthony Watson and Karter Greaves Green, his sister, Cathreen Green Jones, mother-in- law, Mattie Lawson Mumby, brothers-in-law, Dr. William Mumby and Ed Covington, sisters-in-law Geri Mumby Covington and Margie Green, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, god-children and wonderful friendships for over 30+ years. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of colleagues, friends, and the community he served with distinction. Sy will be remembered fondly for his profound impact and enduring legacy.
A private family service will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Vaughn Greene Chapel at Randallstown, 8728 Liberty Road, Randallstown, MD 21133.
On Thursday, April 4, 2024, a celebration of life for Mr. Sylvester Green will be held at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, 830 E. Pratt Street, in Baltimore, MD 21202. Friends are invited to participate virtually beginning at 12:00 p.m. via the enclosed link:
