Sylvester Adron "Pete" Harland

Sylvester Adron "Pete" Harland was born on February 21, 1956, to the parents of Kenneth and Laura Harland in Houston, Texas. Sylvester received his education from Kashmere High School, Class of 1974. After graduation, Sylvester attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas, on a football scholarship. He received accolades for being the first in his family to win the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II Championship. Sylvester met the love of his life and married his high school sweetheart, Donna Sharp. They were married for over 33 years. To this union two daughters were born, Nyree Nate' Harland and Nerissa Nicole Harland. Sylvester was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Sylvester was baptized at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of the late Pastor Dr. A. A. McCardell, Sr. where he attended Sunday School, morning worship and served on the Junior Usher Board. After college, Sylvester "Pete" became a Deputy Sherriff with the Harris County Sheriff's Department where he worked for over 10 years. He continued his career as a Police Officer with Houston Independent School District (HISD) and JVC/Kenwood. Sylvester would later be employed at the City of Pasadena as an Animal Control Officer. He trained and cared for service animals for over 15 years before leaving due to declining health. Sylvester lived life of 68 years and was fond of sharing stories and history with his grandson, daughters and close friends. He was an avid football lover, collected memorabilia from his daughter travels, enjoyed cooking and watching western movies. He was also a member of the Healthcare for the Homeless Consumer Advisory Board.
Sylvester "Pete" is preceded in death by his mother, Laura Harland; brother, Tyrone Harland; uncles, William Penn McGowan and Willie Bright; three aunts, Ruth McGowan, Dinah Bright and Rosia McGowan and other relatives.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his two daughters, Nyree and Nerissa Harland; two grandchildren, Garian and Gia Heard; One ex-wife, Donna Harland; one sister, Janis Diane Harland; three nieces, Kimberly Watkins, Shantrice Collins and Tyffany Harland; one nephew, Tyrone Kevin Harland; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at Claire Brothers Funeral Home, 7901 Hillcrfoft Street, Houston, Texas 77081. The visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the service will begin at 12:00 noon.
