It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Sylvia Hogg Gilmore, affectionately known as Sylvia, on June 27, 2025. Born on February 24, 1942, in Barnwell, SC, Sylvia spent a life full of love, laughter, and a deep sense of care for others. As Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Sylvia embodied this sentiment, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Sylvia's journey took her from her childhood in Barnwell, where she discovered her passion for basketball, to becoming a loving mother who traveled with her family from one military base to another as her then-husband served in the Marine Corps. Eventually, they made their home in New Bern, North Carolina when his military career brought them to Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station. Sylvia was a pillar of strength and love to her daughters, Lori and Amy, offering not only a shoulder to lean on but also a guiding light. Sylvia's love for children extended beyond her own family, reflected in her dedication as a Teacher's Assistant at Brinson Elementary School. She found joy in helping her students thrive, watching them grow from the seeds of potential into flowers of achievement.
Throughout her life, Sylvia was a lover of animals, books, and the simple pleasures of watching old westerns and British comedy and mystery shows. Her home was often filled with the gentle rustling of book pages, the laughter from the comedic shows she loved, and the pitter-patter of the many dogs she provided a home for, mirroring her beautiful, compassionate spirit. Sylvia was a beacon of kindness, always extending her heart to the those in need, whether it was a child in need of academic help or a rescue dog in need of a loving home. To quote Mark Twain, "Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see." Indeed, Sylvia spoke this language fluently, and her radiant kindness will be remembered by all.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ethel Hogg. She is survived by her daughters, Lori Flowers and Amy Wojtkiw (Tom); her grandson, Thomas Wayne Frye, Jr. (Samantha); great grandsons, Gavin Frye and Zack Frye, who all will continue to carry her legacy of love, resilience, and kindness forward. Sylvia was a remarkable woman whose life was a testament to the power of love and the strength of the human spirit.
In lieu of a local service, she will be laid to rest at the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery, Sunday, August 17, 2025 at 10am.
In honor of Sylvia's love for animals, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to the Colonial Capital Humane Society.
