Sylvia Kjos Obituary

Sylvia Kjos
May 7, 1944 - November 10, 2025
Sylvia Delores Borg was born on May 7, 1944, in Sidney, MT to parents, Leif and Doris Anna (Udo) Borg. Sylvia was baptized at the Scandinavian Evangelical Lutheran Church at Four Mile on May 28, 1944, where her parents were members. She was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairview, MT.
As a child, Sylvia would join her parents everywhere they went. She would ride on the tractor with her dad or sit in the truck and sing with her mom during harvest. Her mother taught her to cook, clean, and bake. They made many donuts, lefse, and Scandinavian treats. Sylvia would help her mother with chores, including feeding and caring for the animals on the farm, setting up incubators for the chickens, geese and ducks, and planting and harvesting the garden.
She loved her pets and spent hours playing with her many cats and kittens, bunnies, and her little dog Trixie. Sylvia's father taught her to sing songs and hymns, many in Norwegian. Sylvia would sing songs solo in church. Her father taught her about bugs under rocks, ant hills, birds, and their songs, and even about constellations in the sky. He would pull hay loose from the stack so Sylvia could feed the cows with him at the manger. When Sylvia was older, her dad taught her target shooting and would take her hunting and fishing.
She attended grade school at Church School (later known as Sweger School) through fifth grade, Missouri Bridge School (also known as Nohly School) through eighth grade, and she graduated from Fairview High School in 1962. She was employed by Fairview Bank the summer before attending Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where she majored in business. She was employed by American State Bank in Williston, ND for five years. She loved her job and working with the public.
While working in Williston, ND, Sylvia met a welder, Genhard Kjos, who worked at Modern Machine Works in Williston. They were married on September 22, 1968, at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairview, MT. They lived in Williston, ND until March of 1970 when they moved to the Borg farm northwest of Fairview and started farming. She then became a homemaker and devoted her time to her family and the raising of her two sons, Michael and Ronald. In 1995, Sylvia and Genhard moved to Sidney, MT and Sylvia became a caretaker for her parents. They lived with them in their home with Genhard driving to the farm daily until Sylvia's father passed away. After this, Sylvia, Genhard and her mother returned to the Borg farm. They enjoyed playing games with their grandchildren and watching them ride their miniature horses. When their granddaughter Lauren arrived in 2004, she became the center of their attention. They enjoyed every minute they spent with her. Sylvia continued to live on the farm until 2018 when she and her husband retired and moved to Sidney, MT.
Sylvia was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School and sent cards for Cradle Roll and Sunshine Committee for many years. She loved music, especially singing with her grandchildren when they were young. Sylvia liked to organize family get-togethers at her home, entertaining friends and was known for her generous hospitality. She also had a passion for collecting family and community history and assembled many books of pictures, stories, and history.
Sylvia peacefully passed away on November 10, 2025, at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings, Montana, joining her beloved husband in heaven.
Surviving her are two sons, Michael (Melodee) Kjos, Fairview, MT and Ronald (Jeana) Kjos, Sheridan, WY; five grandchildren, Lindsee (Jake) Reynen, Logan (Katie) Kjos, Lauren Kjos, Roxanne Lueders, and Tanner (Brittany) Kjos; three great grandchildren Laine, Willa, and Harlee; one step great-grandson, Easton Lueders; brother-in-law, John (Colleen) Kjos, sister-in-law Jeanie Kjos and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by; her husband of 54 years, Genhard Kjos; father and mother-in-law Oswald and Elva Kjos; brothers-in-law Norman and Floyd Kjos; sisters-in-law Alvinna (Kjos) Martel and Peggy Kjos; her parents, Leif and Doris (Udo) Borg; her grandparents: Lars and Gunda (Mellum) Borg, and William and Daisy (Ensign) Udo; two nephews David Martel and Ricky Martel plus numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
