Ted LaVerne Hulbert died peacefully of multiple heart ailments at the age of 86 on June 9, 2025, surrounded by love and family. He is survived by a loving family that is part of his legacy: Rosalie (Waits) Hulbert, his wife of almost 64 years; their two sons, Gregory and David, and their families.
Greg & Adelaide have two children, Sawyer and Connor. Sawyer and her husband Jackson have a son Charlie (almost 2) and a baby on the way in August; Connor and his wife Taylor are expecting their first child in September.
Dave & Amy have two children, Benjamin and Olivia.
Ted is also survived by: siblings Dorothy Sinjem (& her family: husband John, & their children Jennifer and Jeff), Barbara Munz (& her son Joe), and Dennis Hulbert (& his wife, Marque); Rosalie's sister Sherryl Fox & her children: Kelly Fox (& her son Kaden) and Don Fox (& his wife Kathy Koga).
Ted was predeceased by: his parents, Dan & Nita Hulbert; his sister and her husband, Shirley and Lynn Dillon; his brother-in-law, Jim Munz; his nephews Jonathon and Christopher Munz; Rosalie's parents, Barton and Rozella Waits; and his brother-in-law, Donald Waits.
Ted was born on June 7, 1939, in Scotia, California. He was the oldest of five children, and they grew up in a loving and trusting family in and around the redwoods of Fortuna, California. His parents worked hard, with his dad working in the logging and building trades and his mom working to raise the children and a big vegetable garden. Ted started helping out with the construction work at a very young age, and he also helped out with the garden and with caring for the dogs, cats, horses, and chickens.
After graduating from Fortuna High School in 1957, Ted attended both undergraduate and graduate school at Stanford University. While at Stanford, he joined an eating club, rowed for the varsity crew team, and earned two degrees: a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering in 1961 and a Masters Degree in Engineering Economics in 1962. When he was home for a visit in 1958, his sisters Dorothy and Barbara set him up at a dance with Rosalie Waits, and the rest is history! They were married on June 25, 1961.
Ted worked for the U. S. Public Health Service in New Mexico and at Taft Engineering Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. When living in Ohio, Ted and Rosalie became active at a local United Methodist church. The pastor at that church saw traits of a pastor in Ted and offered a full ride scholarship to attend Methodist Theological School of Ohio in Delaware. After graduating from there in 1967, they moved to Oregon to begin a 37 year career in the ministry: from Reedsport to Salem, Roseburg, and Eugene.
After a short stint of serving Wesley United Methodist Church in Eugene, Ted was appointed to his dream job: combining ministry with his love of nature and the outdoors as the Director of Camp Magruder, with Rosalie working alongside him as the office manager. What started out as a five-year commitment turned into a 15-year stint that brought them and many others joy in many ways.
Ted worked and lived his values of love, servitude, family, and equity. He always stood up for those who needed an ally, from the gay community in Roseburg to low-income families in Salem and Portland. He made sure to spend quality time with his family: camping, backpacking, cross-country skiing, playing cards, and lots of dad jokes. He attended his kids' games and activities, and he was a loving and dedicated husband and father.
In 2004, Ted suffered a rare kind of stroke that targeted his short-term memory. Life changed instantly, as Ted became dependent and Rosalie became his caretaker. Throughout the challenges, Ted remained the same at his core: kind, caring, and making the best of everything. That positive attitude and sense of humor endured through his final day.
For anyone wanting to pay respects to the life and legacy of Ted Hulbert, he requested four things:
