Galveston: Teddy Clinton Yoak, age 70, of Galveston, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 18, 2024.
Born on December 12, 1953, in Dorr, Michigan, Ted's early promise in baseball was evident when he was drafted by the Houston Astros after attending Western Michigan University from 1972 to 1974. Though an injury cut short his baseball career, Ted's indomitable spirit led him to his true calling-cooking. He refined his culinary skills in various Galveston restaurants, ultimately making his mark as the head chef at Randall's West End. There, he met and worked alongside his future wife, Edwina.
Ted's culinary journey continued as he took on roles as Executive Chef for several Fertitta and Landry properties, before transitioning to a food broker, where he shared his passion for food with many. His dedication to his craft and his ability to connect with others through food were hallmarks of his career.
Ted and Edwina shared a profound and enduring love until her passing in 2018. Though they did not have children of their own, Ted embraced and lovingly cared for Edwina's children, and together they raised their granddaughter, Brooklyn, with joy and devotion.
Known for his selflessness and humility, Ted preferred to stay out of the limelight. He was often seen in his signature bright red Converse sneakers, and his presence was always marked by the delightful aromas emanating from his kitchen. His great sense of humor, warmth, and genuine care for family, friends, and neighbors were central to his character.
A private memorial will be held to honor Ted's life.
Ted is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edwina Yoak, and his parents, Millard Yoak and Trula Yoak.
He is survived by his stepchildren: William and Meredith Whitney, Jason and Karen Whitney, Matthew and Becky Whitney, and Amanda Whitney; his grandchildren: Jacob, Megan, Allison, Liam, Mason, Madison, Gunnar, Trygg, Megan, Austin, Jordan, Brooklyn, and Kimber; and his great-granddaughter, Abigail.
Pallbearers will include William Whitney, Jason Whitney, Matthew Whitney, Michael Burnett, and Zachary Livingood. Honorary pallbearers are Clifford Hall Jr., Mike Burnett, Davis Lewis, and Dane Bolton.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to UTMB Galveston, EMS, and Laurel Court for their exceptional care and support during Ted's final days.
