Terrence Distel, 88, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, in
Gaylord, Michigan. A devoted family man, community leader, and lifelong supporter of local initiatives, Terrence left a legacy through his service and generosity.
Born on September 23, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, Terrence pursued higher education at Hillsdale College, where he met his wife, Linda. After earning his CPA certification, Terrence went on to build his practice and contributions to the business landscape of his community.
Terrence was instrumental in founding the local Sportsplex-a hub that brought people together through athletics and recreation. His leadership extended beyond this endeavor as he served on several local boards, always striving to improve the quality of life for those in his hometown. His influence was felt not only in boardrooms but also in classrooms and sports fields.
A veteran of the United States Army, Terrence carried the values of discipline and service into every aspect of his civilian life. His involvement reflected his belief in giving back.
Terrence shared 64 years with his beloved wife, Linda Distel. Together, they raised a family that brought him much joy. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Jennifer Taylor, Catherine Elgart, and Amy Distel-Hogan; and his grandchildren, Kelsey Taylor, Colton Taylor, Grace Gordon, and Regan Distel. He also holds a cherished place in memory alongside his daughter, Elizabeth Distel-Grady, who preceded him in death.
Outside of his professional and civic commitments, Terrence found great joy in simple pleasures. He played in a men's hockey league well into later years-a testament to both his vitality and love for sport. Summers often found him boating on Michigan's lakes or gathered around the television cheering for Notre Dame football.
Terrence Distel will be remembered not only for what he accomplished but for how he lived-with integrity and an enduring spirit of generosity. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 3, 2025, from 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM at Otsego Resort 696 East M-32. Family visitation with pie and ice cream will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 PM after the celebration of life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Terrence memory to the St Mary's School Support Fund at https://www.wesharegiving.org/app/giving/WeShare-524?tab=home. The family will match all donations received.
